I'm happy, I spend time with family; the in-laws use my boat more than me. I enjoy my toys, learning to work on them, and restoration. This is my hobby. 1946 f1 truck, 1949 f1truck, 1970 duster, 1988 fourwinns 205 sundowner. and they all worth more than I paid. And my family helps work on them. Methinks this is not slavery, but getting my mind of work, and relaxing.

For the most part, the French, Spanish and Italians value family way more than posessions.

On the positive side this thread got me out with my family today and we went beach combing.d
I think what you have pride in is a personal thing.I know
some people who volunteer there time to help others but also have the shinest car on the block and take pride in both.
I know France and America are two diffrent cultures.You also have to remeber that in France the average person
can not afford to many things that we take for granted or simply dont have the room for them.An good example of this is over there thay have to pay for every time thay use the phone "even for the internet" as if it were long distance.Wouldnt you just go over to you familys house and see them in person if that was how our phone system was here.
Note Correct me if im wrong on the phone thing but im very shure thats how it works over there .

Certain "things" do make our lives easier, more comfortable, free up time & provide us with pleasure. Those things, I think, are worth having, keeping up & taking pride in.

Other things are simply empty trappings of our BS materialistic culture - "bigger" this, "better" that, "faster" whatever. We are constant targets of conditioning by the Madison Ave. gurus to "need" this stuff as much as, if not more than, the things in paragraph one.

Like JB wisely advises - learning to know the difference can provide a lot of peace within yourself.

I am 23 years old. I own my truck (96 Bronco), my boat (87 sylvan v171), and pretty soon i will own my own house. I have 3 kids ages 3,2,1, and a loving wife. I has been working my a$$ of since I was 16. I don't even make $30k a year. You can Call me materialistic i don't care. I proud of my posessions. I take good care of my family and my toys. I can proudly say that i have worked to earn what i have. So if someone has problem with that they can get kiss off!8)
