sae 40 oil good to use in 4.3 v6?

bought a 1989 rinker 4.3 v6 last spring, in the fall i put vavoline sae40 the owners manual had three different types to use just want to make sure i.m ok

eagh... straight 40 is a little thick. Especially on those cold morning starts. Valvoline makes a 20-40HD that will work a little better for you.

Welcome aboard jellydude . . . This topic has been seriously beat to death here. Do a search for oil here and you'll get reading for a month :eek: The best reply to this is to follow the owners manual for your manufacturer which I assume is Mercruiser, but may be an OMC or Volvo. Generally, Merc recommends a Marine Grade 25W40 . . . ;)

i use 30wt in my merc 1978 L6 and have no problems with it

40 weight is fine above 50 deg, but as mentioned above, there are better choices available these days.

I use what is recommended in my manual and that is mercs 25w40. Costs about $5.00 a quart. In my 1984 runabout i used straight 30w because of the motors age.

I run 30HD in my 4.3.
I recall seeing some multi-grades in the manual (not handy at the moment) for colder climates.
