hey guys, just bought an 2007 Regal with a 5.7 Volvo duo-prop. I'm going to change the lower unit oil and after some reading, it seems that these props often freeze to the shaft. I ordered the prop removal wrenches. While i'm waiting for it, i was thinking about spraying the nuts/shaft with penetrating oil. Just want to make sure the oil wont damage any shaft seals etc...Should i go ahead and start spraying? thanks

Ayuh,.... No reason not to try oil if ya think they're seized,...

The shafts should be slathered with grease, before the props are slid on anyways,....

Have you tried to take them off as to just speculating there frozen? You might get by if there frozen so to speak with tapping with a mallet.
Would have tried before purchasing the prop removal tool. When you get them off you won't need that tool again if you remove and grease the splines every year

the tool i bought is actually the sockets to remove the nuts...I guess the inside prop is what its most needed for? I havent tried removing anything yet. I'm just assuming the worst, but hoping they slide right off. once i get them off i plan to grease often.. thanks

i also noticed my drive bellow has some dry cracking. Removing this drive seems pretty straight forward (6 nuts & shift linkage), but are there any special tools needed to get the new bellows on? unfortunately i cant find any videos on this.. if its pretty involved i may just bring it in to a marina.. thanks again

If the bellows is cracked, replace it soon. It may already be leaking which will cause damage to gimble bearing and u joints which can get expensive and could sink your boat if left in tHe water long enough. It is fairly easy to replace almost self explanatory. You may want to build a cart to support the weight of the unit while you work on it.

i plan on replacing asap...after i pull the outdrive via the 6 nuts+ remove the shift cable linkage+ pull the rams, what else needs to be removed to get the old bellows off & new bellows on? do I need to remove the gimbal housing?

It can help make it a little bit easier, but not required.

If your prop is seized to the shaft, try taking a heat source to the prop and getting it hot enough to break up the salt or corrosion on them, then take a prop puller and yank it off. Might take a few good whacks, but it works. As mentioned before, GREASE THEM UP REALLY GOOD!!!!! never can have enough grease with these things.

well, never mind the prop, i can't even get the front prop nut off. my prop wrench is starting to bed. Is this shaft reverse threaded or something?!? i'm turning the wrench counter clockwise and its not budging. I may have to try a lil heat next..IMG_1267.JPG

Try applying a little head with a blow torch. Its not reverse threaded.

What ever you do do not i repeat do not put heat on the prop nut. It has a rubber in it like nyloc nuts. You will melt it and have to buy new ones. They have a Manufactures service life of 50 uses. My VP Duo Prop outer takes a 30mm socket.
Put a 2x4 between the inner prop and bottom of the unit and take off. When you reinstall just use the tool. It doesn't need to be any tighter then you can get it with the tool. I think your going to need a chain wrench to use on the tool so you don't deform it.
A pipe wrench might work but be careful not to collapse the tool you have on there now. It's not on there as tight as you think. That handle is just cheap. I did the same thing with mine
Righty= tighty

Try a longer rod that will fit all the way through the holes, enough to give you a grip on both sides. Grab the rod and push down on one side and pull up on the other.

CORRECT!! Do not directly put heat on the prop nut. You will melt the rubber. A little heat on the actual prop away from the washer is ok though.

I don't mean to pick on your tool but . . .
Wouldn't a proper socket, and extension, and a long breaker bar work better? It looks like that little thing you've got is just bending all to heck.

still trying to get this prop off! Ive spent hours and hours with no success. I've sprayed penetrating oil day after day after day. I currently have a puller hooked up and still no luck..I'm getting beyond frustrated at this point. All i'm trying to do is change the gear oil... Any other suggestions?!?
