This seems like a stupid question but better safe than sorry, Is it safe to (test) start my motor with the pull cord if the battery and ignition are not connected or does it need the battery connected to turn over?

If by safe you mean will it hurt the motors electrical system, No. What you wont have however is an imediate means to shut the engine off, other than disconnecting the fuel as you have now taken your switch out of the equation. You'll also have to disconnect the ground from the coil in order to get her to run else she'll just keep grounding and you'll be pulling all day. Just to add in case you don't know, keep the motor submerged in water or you could run the chance of burning up your cooling pump.

There is no "ground" from the coil to disconnect. If the cables (and ignition switch), are disconnected, just choke it and pull it and it should run. If the ignition switch is connected, it has to be turned on.

To save your arm and shoulder, pull the recoil starter and use a rope wrapped around the flywheel...there is a notch built into it. You get more leverage this way, important when you are pull starting a cold motor. After it runs a bit and warms up it will take a lot less effort to start by hand.

Strange in order for me to get mine to run without the battery I had to disconnect the leads from the top of mine. Then to get it to shut off I had to disconnect the fuel.
