Hello,
I have a 1979 70 HP Evinrude and would like to install a safty kill swith for it. The kind that you snap to you belt or whatever with a cord attached to kill the engine if thrown from the boat. I don't plan on getting thrown from the boat, but I fish alone a lot. Is there anything available after market as my boat doesn't have one? thanks for the help....

Re: SAFETY KILL SWITCH

"Kill" is achieved by connecting(shorting) the black w/purple tracer wire going to the ignition switch, to the black(which is a ground) wire, also going to the ignition switch. IOW, a switch to connect the black/purple to either the black or a ground will do the trick.

Black with yellow tracer. Commonly called the "bumble bee" wire.

Most any marine dealer will stock them. Sierra makes an aftermarket switch.

BoatBouy,
Are you sure about that black/purple tracer wire?
I recall it as black/yellow tracer wire. That connected to ground shuts down the ignition.

Vantoo,
you can purchase a universal switch or an OMC/BRP switch to do this, and they both mount in the dash. You can also mount an OMC/BRP switch in your control box, like newer boxes had them.Either way,I prefer the OMC switch as it looks to be better quality.

DHP

ok, so I get an OMC switch and mount it to my contol box. I assume it will come with instructions. I am pretty mechanically incline and can do most anything I put my mind to. Any other input greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help.

Probably no instructions.
Your 'style' control box was used for quite a few years.Later boxes of the same 'style' had kill switches in them.
To do this you'll have to buy the switch for a newer control box, open your control box, drill a hole for the switch, instal it,wire it,and put the box back togeather. The wiring inside the box is quite tight.
Option is OMC/BRP make a dash plate kit that does the same thing, but there is a lot more room to wire things in the dash.

DHP

I understand more room to wire it on the dash, but don't you still have to get inside the control box to access the correct wires?

Yea, black w/yellow. Memory's failing. I had to look at wiring diagram again. Sorry, I'll sit down and shut up now.
