Having buried two grandparents, and aunt and an uncle in the last two years I've had my fill of funerals for a while, but yesterday was the toughest one yet for me. My uncle Mike was a step-uncle if there is such a thing, but he was one of the finest men I've ever known. I think the entire town was at the church yesterday. My aunt was really struggling before God sent him to her. She had been married to a philandering bum who finally left her and left behind two devastated little girls who are now grown but are still emotionally scarred from his total abandonment of them. Uncle Mike married her and gave those girls the father they should have had and then some. He rescued that family in every sense of the word, but we lost him to cancer late last week. He was 64 and so full of life; one of those men who brightened a room with his presence. I could go on and on about what an outstanding man he was, but I'll just say he was a hero to me and I'll really miss him, especially at the annual family reunion. I can't begin to imagine how tough it has been and will be for my aunt.
