well i think they need to understand the whole concept of dog down the hatches when your in rough water

a bad broaching and knock down turned into a sinking because the cabin was wide open

tommays

Yikes!
Now I'm certainly a newbie when it comes to sailing, but it seemed in the first couple of shots he was in a situation that could easily been avoided. I mean, it doesn't look like a lee shore or anything.

Then again, perhaps the unpainted bottom was testament to his inexperience?

Re: Sailing in the surf of SF.

On another sailing web site this disaster was throughly discussed. The guy who took the pics had comments about the owner. According to another guy sailing the bay that day the current was ripping and wind howling more than usual.

The boat was owned and sailed by an experienced SF Bay local. He raced the boat extensively and won many races. Pics indicate the hatch boards and main hatch were already open but I doubt the hatch boards would have stayed in under those conditions anyway. On most boats that size you can kick the boards in and a wave is stronger.

the boards on my J-24 were pretty strong and we use to allways keep a clip in the hasp on anything not being used in bad conditions

it also used to be common to launch the chute through the forward deck hatch

it became a class violation to due this after a few boats got in trouble burying the bow in rough conditions

tommays

Thanks BillP, I had forgotten about those legendary currents. Looks like it would be just about the worst place for them too.

Yep, should have had her buttoned up.

There's been several older J24 sinkings here where I race, they get knocked down, and the lazzerette pops open, and fills the boat. Can be avoided with a $1 aluminum caribeener put through the latch.
