Does anyone have any experience using Salt-Away to clean out the salt scale and residual aluminum oxide that clogs the water cooling passages in mid-range outboards used in saltwater (and not trailored)? I have a 1993 175 hp V-6 that continually overheats at high RPM, despite changing the thermostats and water pump. Thanks.

I had a similar situation, salt away cleared up those passages but good. I purchased the attachment to hook up to the rabbit ears and gave it about four doses of the stuff. Lasted about a month, or 8 trips before it needed it again. Liquid gold IMO.

Several years ago I purchased a used salt water run 9.9 yamaha 4 stroke kicker that had salt water related cooling problems. Recently the tell tale pisser stopped working.<br />4 treatments of salt-away and it started working again. My guess is that salt-away works.

I use Salt Away Every time & have for the 11 seasons I have my Merc. 225. I have changed T-Stats & Poppets along w/ The water pump, as a mater of regular maintenance, & everything comes apart well,& looks clean inside. I recomend using it to clean up your salt problem, but you sound like you have a poppet valve problem. Buy the flusher attatchment, & a hose quick connect from Home depot. it works if you use it regularly. Good luck, Joe

Saltaway has worked for me too. My boat is on a hoist and used in salt water nine months of the year. Saltaway in the spring keeps it relatively clean all year. Don't have to change thermostats on Johnson V-4 every two years like I used to.

Re: Salt-Away

Thanks for the info. But I don't see a poppet valve in the system. I see a T-Stat with spring, and that's all. Where is the poppet valve if not integral with the T-Stat?
