Salt build up in 1976 Evinrude 15hp

I purchased this motor a while back and started tearing it apart changing the water pump and such. I have found that it was used in saltwater at some point. Where the shift rod is has some salt build up. it seems like more small crystals than anything else. is there any thing i can do to clean out that area to get most of the build up out.

A long thin screwdriver works pretty well, hose out, repeat.

Ensure the drain hole at the bottom of that cavity is clear so water drains out freely. A solid wire works pretty well for clearing it out.

ok, about what i thought. I will play with it tomorrow and see how clean i can get it.
