If i use my tracker 16 riveted boat in salt water what precautions can i take to prevent corrosion. Also what precautions should i take with my mercury 40 hp motor.I have taken an interest in fishing intercostal waterways but do not want to ruin my boat.

Do not let any sinkers, hooks, swivels, etc.... get into contact with the alloy, it will start the corrosion process.

Do wash the boat thoroughly with fresh water after every trip. Flush the outboard's cooling system too.

If the outboard hasn't got a sacrificial anode, GET ONE.

Do a regular inspection, any blistering under paint is a sign of corrosion starting. Any white ccrystaline stuff is the same.

Basically you should be OK, we use Alloy boats over here in salt water all the time. Many of our major Boat builders are making plate alloy boats for offshore fishing.

http://www.nobleengineering.com.au/boatmanufacturing.htm

http://www.quintrex.com.au/

http://www.stacer.com.au/

These are some of them. Most boats here see regular salt water use, and most of them last for many years, my little tinny is 20years old, and still going fine. It all comes down to how you clean and care for your rig.

Assuming you trailer the boat, just make sure you dont leave the anchor or anchor chain in contact with the aluminum EVER, and wash the boat thoroughly including the bottom with fresh water. If you leave it in water for more than a few days at a time ,thats an entirely different post.Charlie
