I have A Yamaha 150 hp.The oil tank on the motor runs all the way down to the bottom line and the alarm goes off. So I take the engine cover off and hit the manual switch and fill it up,so I know the pump works. So I replaced the float in the tank on the engine. It does the same thing. Is there any test with a meter or any way I can figure out why the pump is not coming on,before I replace the brain? Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Salt Water Series 150 Pump Failure

hello
do some searching about oil injection troubleshooting on this board. the complete guide is here someplace. if the pump works manually the wiring between the pump and the motor is ok. the most common cause is the filter is clogged and it wont transfer oil fast enough. on the 150 you should be able to empty the engine tank via the water trap and the pump should tirn on if the remote tank switch is closed and the tank is full.if the remote tank switch is open you should have a yellow light and the pump wont transfer with the engine tank switch. if you unplug the connector at the engine oil tank use a ju7mper lead between the black wire and the blue/geen wire with the key on. it should transfer. jump between the blue/white to shut off the transfer. first veryify with an ohmeter that the black wire is grounded and not open. if it does not pass this test suspect the controller. its a very simple DC circuit but it can be a teaser. be aware on certain engines in the 94 95 models had the trim sender as an override. if the sender is bad it may stop oil transfer. it was desined to prevent transfer if the engine was tilted .what year are we dealing with here? if it has a seperate control box its a lot older than a saltwater series. I think all the saltwater series v-6's had the controoler built into the ECU.
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt, thanks for the reply. This is a 95 model. Are you talking about the filter in the large oilfill tank?I do get a yellow light and audible alarm when the tank on the motor runs low. I will try this test tomorrow to see if it passes and also look back in archives for more info. How can i test the trim sender?

Re: Salt Water Series 150 Pump Failure

hello
the tank swtiches on the motor strictly control pump off, pump on, green lights and redlight/audible. if your getting a yellow check the black ground circiut and the tank switch. with a yellow lamp there will be no oil transfer.the controller figgures why bother aint no oil to transfer. yes the filter in the remote tank can clog and the engine will use oil faster than it can be transfered. a quick test is to drain the engine tank. make sure you have at least a half tank in the remote and turn the keyswitch on. you should have 3 flashing bars or lights on the tach, a buzzer and oil transfer. it should refill the tank completely in less than 180 seconds. if it does not you have a restriction or clogged filter. does your trim gauge work? if it does the sender is working. if not you have a 3 wire system. the resistance on the black to pink is about 600 ohms. and 800 to 1200 varying with the position of the sender on the orange to black wires. I may have the pink and orange reversed. its early and I am old. as soon as my legs cooperate I am off to work. but the black wire is a common ground the orange is a reference and the pink is pick off voltage. so good luck and keep posting

Hey Rodbolt, Just wanted to thank on the great information. It turns out it was the trim indicator. It thought the motor was all the way up. Problem is solved after about a year. Your right on time brother, Thanks, Todd
