Saltwater flushing help

2002 225 EFI<br />I flush the motor after each use. Don't know what the prev. owner did. It has a port on the back of the motor for flushing. I don't think this will flush through the power-head. Seems only to flush lower unit. Should I run on muffs for a better flush? If I use a product like Salt-away on muffs would it remove any buildup in the head?<br />Thanks, Dead Eye

You need a manual first...explains all. But if it has a flush attachment, it will do the powerhead, as thats what it there for. <br /> But on the Saltaway, it will NOT remove ANY buildup. It only neutralizes the effect of salt. Still OK to use, but best from day one on a new motor

I was just reading the uses and directions on SaltAway this am at the shop and according to the bottle, it will help clean it up over time and keep salt off. I have never used it but have read a couple of posts from those who have and they claim good results.<br />I have been considering it's use.

Dead eye...the flush port on the back of the engine will flush everything, if this is a OMC you will notice when the engine is running, this is where your tell-tale is coming from, that's straight from the block. Just don't run the engine using this port as it will not fill up the water pump sufficiently and you will harm the impeller, only use muffs when you want to run it out of the water, but for flushing only it's fine.

I had an old head I let sit in a double solution for a month, and it didn't remove any of the build up......

I think I will start using Salt-Away this weekend to see if it improves the cooling system. Will post results when I (Hopefully) get some.<br /> Dead Eye

I've used Saltaway and have had good results with it. I keep my boat on a hoist in saltwater and only flush it once a year. It keeps the corrosion down--not perfect, but much better than just fresh water.

Are you sure about that? <br /><br />The manual states:<br /><br />1. remove plug from flushing port<br />2. Install flushing device( if needed) and garden hose<br />3. Start water and keep pressure between 20 and 45 psi<br />4. Start engine and flush for at least 5 minutes keeping motor at 1500 rpm or less.<br />5. Shut off motor , remove garden hoe and reinstall water pump indicator

All I know is what I have seen on impellers that have been run this way, and they die pretty quickly run dry like that. Running the engine no higher than 1500 RPM isn't gonna do much more than just backflushing without running, and all it takes is one shot above 1500 and your gonna start scraping that impeller apart. I've also not seen any garden hose with 45psi.
