What is the proper procedure if saltwater gets into the lower unit through leaky seals ?

Re: saltwater in lower unit

First, be sure you identify the seals and get them replaced. As for the saltwater inside, I think I would first flush the unit with a lightweight oil (like a general lube oil or gun oil type). Once it is flushed as well as you can get it, replace lower unit gear oil, maybe add an additive and run it for a few hours. Bring back and change gear oil again and see if there is any other signs of water.

I had my seals replaced and foot oil changed about 2 months ago (before I found this board) and I need to drain it again replace with fresh as a precaution to be sure all of the water is out.
Knightgang
