Hey all,

I was looking to get some rod holders for my 25' Monterey, it's a crusing boat so it didn't come pre-quipped with the essential fishing needs. I was at West Marine the other day and checked out a rod holder, but it specifically stated "For Use In Freshwater only" ...

...or if that doesn't work...

....it's a stainless steel rod holder, but does anybody think it actually would hold up for saltwater??

I'm not going to be trolling for bluefin or billfish, mostly for blues and stripers up here in New England if any trolling at all...

Have any thoughts?

Re: Saltwater Rod Holders

i dont think my gunnels are thick enough for those, i'm going to have to measure. I was thinking more along the lines of rail mounts, but I'll check yours out. Thanks.

either the PVC plastic ones or stainless steel, either one will last for at least several years in a saltwater environment. i have seen both get to looking a little rough after 5+ years of saltwater

Re: Saltwater Rod Holders

I bought SS rail mount rod holders BUT the mounting bracket is made from zymac! which pitted badly after a couple of years. After discarding the mounting bracket from the SS holder, I attached marine grade SS hose clamps and they have been good for years.

Few things are as advertised. (SS but not all parts were SS).

I have used the black copolymer (plastic?) ones, that swivel up & down and turns 360 and can be removed/stored. Mine's mounted to the inside of the gunwale. They also can be mounted to rails. I'd guess most major shops like WestMarine carry them. Got mine from Carbela. Attwood is one name brand.
I've never had a problem w/them.

We have stainless steel and they've held up perfectly for 6-7 years now. We rinse with fresh water then apply "Alumi Guard."

I have the identical stainless angle adjustable rod holders and bought them 3 years ago. They look to have few years left. Just make sure they are fastened tight on the gunnels. Ran into an incident last week I got a bite, rod holder bracing was loose and rod practically fell into the water. The bite turned out to be seaweed

While my rod holders are still functioning the bracket/bracing has begun to pit. Trying to visualize hose clamps. Thanks for the advice Ltnick:D
