Re: Sand/bead blasting

I purchased this sandblaster from Northern Tool about a month ago. This turned out to work like $#*%.
Northern_Blaster

It constantly get clogged, even with the expensive media. I have taken it apart so many times that I could now do it in the dark. Now it just sits in the corner.

One of my friends suggested this model.
Northern_BlasterII

It only cost $20.00 and works great. The trick is to hold the trigger down with the hose out of the media, then insert the hose into the media with your other hand when blasting. If you do your blasting in a large cardboard box (outside as suggested), you can save most of the media for the recycle. I do have a sandblaster that produce 10cfm @ 125psi which also helps.

OK guys, it sounds like those little blasters don't have blow back valves to unclog them. Take a look at my TiP blaster. it has an extra air hose and valve to force air back up through the sand valve or force air only out through the nozzle. Should be easy enough to put one on yours.
No chance to even get it out of the box yet OMC. Work has had me pinned down.

Re: Sand/bead blasting

I started a similar thread over in trailers and towing, and OMC bumped it up for me...thank you for that...I'd like to continue with some similar questions on this same thread, if some of you would oblige me.
Pressure blaster vs. gravity feed. I have an 80 gallon air compressor that does an average job of keeping up with my gravity-fed blaster. It's an old sears model, and does the trick. I want to go faster, though. What's the coverage difference between these pressure tank models and the gravity-feed? Any of your thoughts are, and always have been, greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Depends on what you get, AND what you expect from it. A sandblaster with no moving parts can't be much of a problem. Besides, I have one of the sandblaster types mentioned, a JUNK Craftsmen (3rd replacement under warranty) 3hp 12gallon 7.5SCFM@90 with which I have stripped motorcycle frames and parts no problem. Little slow, and as Lubedude said, it will collect water, which a firm whack against something hard will clear. Go for it. You might want to look at the handheld they have too..I just bought one.

" What's the coverage difference between these pressure tank models and the gravity-feed"

No comparison, The pressure blaster will be way faster if you can supply the air fast enough. I gave my gravity gun away after using my pressure blaster.

Re: Sand/bead blasting

OMC, thank you very much. That's EXACTLY what I was hoping to find out. I'm relatively sure that my compressor will stand the work, but if it won't, I'll be buying a new one. I've been doing a lot of side work, so I guess it'll pay for itself.
