Hi all -

I'm repowering my pontoon with a 115 or 125 outboard. I've looked at some 1980s motors and I think I want newer. So I'm into the later 1990s and early 2000s motors.

Going for the good stuff, Johnson, Evinrude, Merc, Yamaha.
115 - 125 HP 2 stoke
Tilt trim
w/ controls
Really looking for very good to excellent shape. Water ready.

Everything is $4000 (+/- a few hundred) in the mid-Ohio area. This is just for the motor loaded into my truck. The rest of the install is on me to complete. I am fully capable of doing the install, but I do need to buy an engine hoist, do all the install and testing myself (my time has a cost too...)

Is $4000 the market price for a good motor? I know there are a lot of variables in market price, but just looking for a sanity check. or is $4000 insane? There is a quality outboard shop a few hours away with a 2000 Johnson 115 completely rebuilt, repainted, perfect condition, 2 yr warranty for $4000. Maybe I have to pay to play ?

THANKS ---

THANKS -

Depends really. At least in Ohio most of the motors are freshwater!!

Sounds a lil pricey to me. 'Specially if'n you have to rig it. Guess it might be in the ballpark for a really mint specimen but I dunno. It's still a 10-15 yr old motor?

115 Evinrude ~REBUILT~ Can Build as 20" or 25". Rebuilt Powerhead,

Rebuilt Carbs, and New Water Pump. $2800

Description Codes: CSPYFN
local shop here in polk city fl............ they have 175 rebuilt for under 4000...........4000 seems high to me for that size and that old of a motor

I like the JohnnyRudes from the '80s, when the people who built them were proud of their product. It is a little harder to determine the history, but any abuse or neglect that can hurt an outboard in 30 years can do it in 10, or less.

Four grand is too much for a bare, UN-demonstrated, 10-15 year old, 115-125 outboard without controls or warranty.

Imo late 70's early 80's were the best of times ...?

I don't think $4K is unrealistic for a "warranted" engine that has been completely gone through.

If you trust the dealer and they have a good reputation, it's probably worth it. I would negotiate a little for maybe: controls, prop, cables, etc.

Installing that engine is as simple as simple gets. Especially on a pontoon.

Thanks all for the sanity check --- keep 'em coming.

Guess it boils down to this:
$10k for a new 115
$4k for a warrantied quality rebuild motor that is 10+ yrs old.
$3k for a traded in motor at the outboard shops
$2k for Craigslist, best effort condition
$1k for an old motor or a project.

Based on your feedback and me wanting a water ready motor, I guess I'm somewhere around $4000.
Guess I'll be experiencing the 'ol sayings, "speed costs money" and "BOAT=Bust Out Another Thousand" hahahahhahaha

Was the motor run for you? Or are thinking about paying $4k for a motor that MAY run?

I would def be asking for compression numbers...and some kind of warranty. That's just me though.

Imo it's hard to beat an old V4 Crossflow, reliability wise. Plus you can beat the snot outa em purty good too ...

I've become rather fond of them. Like to buy em cheap & fix em up. Enjoy doing most of the work myself. Which is not rocket science btw. If I can do it you can too. These motors aren't all that complicated.

Here's my latest aquisition: '78 High-Port 140. Sans lower unit. $100. Sure it's gonna need a lil work but betcha I kin get it haulin a** fer a lot less than 4K?

It really depends on the motor. You are probably looking at $3500 for a decent 2-stroke from a reputable shop. If you are patient you can find one for a song but you really have to check it out. I'm just about to sell a good 1998 evinrude 115 jet with controls and I'll probably ask $3250.

Re: Sanity check, $4000 for a perfect 115 125 outboard ?

if you look around at rotten boats, sometimes they come for cheap with motors in great running shape, I got such a deal, $500 boat motor trailer, ad read needs floor, I replaced the rotten wood but could have just as well pulled the motor to use on something else, all I had to do to get it running was hook it to a battery and gas line.:noidea: I have thought of repowering with a few more horses, If I do that's how I will do it. heres one
