Whew. Too HOT! I'm not inclined to go out there at 7am to find a good spot on the beach.

You're just down the way from me, I'm out in Parrish.

Live in Palmetto...Taking the boat and staying on the boat in sarasota and heading out the pass for the races....

I'm not familiar with the rules for boaters out there, but you can get out and anchor up in a position to watch them?

My boat won't be running in time for this year, I don't think......but maybe next year!

What's your 'hole in the water'?

34' Silverton Cruiser...you anchor on the side of the course opposite the beach

Silverton- Hmmm very interesting. Can you tell us more about the spectator anchorage and course areas proximity? How rough will it be out there? Obviously your 34 footer will be fine, but is it likely to be to rough for little boats ie 20'? I'd love to see this form the water but not if I'm bouncing around like the "Minnow" on Gilligan's Island LOL

I cannot tell you what the seas will be yet but if you go out to the gulf on south end of lido key, you can anchor on the outside of the course. The inside (beachside) is for beach spectators. There will be temp. markers that you have to be outside of. If you are by the markers, the race boats will go by you about 30 feet away. Pretty intense. Just moor by all the other boats. I think the races are at 11 and 1. Have had a blast there last several years. Last year Geico race boat was doing about 180mph...

We were out on the Manatee River yesterday and on the outside of Emerson Point and the west/southwest wind was kicking up some chop, but if we don't get any unusual weather patterns I can't imagine if would be too windy/choppy.

I would definitely NOT use 10th Street boat ramp in sarasota...use another local one....10th Street will be chaos. we are staying at the ramada inn in sarasota on tamiami trail sat. night...nice seawall to tie up to and nice facilities. Anchoring should not be a problem...most people leave you space but then again, there is always that one person you think" why does he have to be next to me?". There are usually pretty good crowds on the south end of the course by the pass. We usually head north so we get to see the boats going by at full speed and there is usually more room to anchor. I would get there 1/2 hour early if you are worried about anchoring. You can always call me if you need someone to tie off of. You will have a good time and anchor as close to the course buoys as possible so no one cuts in front of you and ruins your view.

Re: Sarasota Offshore Powerboat Races

Thanks Silverton34c. Yea I figured that the 10th street would be full of race boats anyways and off limits. Unfortunately, due to logistics and the round trip from Ocala it looks like I'll be spectating as a land lubber on Lido instead :( But looking forward to it anyways :)
So this will be a reconnaissance mission for later in the summer for a pleasure cruise weekend, but maybe we'll catch the race in Clearwater come September! Thanks for the offers and have fun out yonder! I'll be amongst the throngs of common people ( and blending in quite well actually LOL)

Yep, me too, albeit from the beach :( From the north end of Lido the boats were a bit far away, thus couldn't appreciate the 115 mph average lap speeds of the Unlimited class completely. But it was fun none the less and despite the average drunkenness on the beach by many a spectator. I walked around the pits drooling and with wood. Downtown saturday night was very entertaining as well!

I'm already planning to make the September event and on the water in Clearwater- Whoooot! :)

Silverton34 or anyone else familiar with the Clearwater area have a suggestion as to a resort or hotel that has reserved overnight (preferably floating) dockage within easy walking distance or on property?? The Hyatt in Sarasota would have been fantastic had I had my act together better for last weekend.

Clearwater Municipal Marina...It is downtown and close to everything....There is a hyatt right around the corner and a bunch of mom and pop motels also...no floating docks that i can think of
