John, your first sentence said it all. I wish you had stopped there. To para-phrase a bit, "some do this, some do that, but by spraying it with ??? you did the same thing " HOGWASH !!! A neoprene or other rubber like gasket, that is designed to resist gasolene and oil that is compressed between metal components is FAR SUPERIOR to any kind of spray-on gunk that the consumer may have or may not have applied properly. If you want to encourage people to take short-cuts to save a few bucks on convenience items or accessories.... well, OK. I for one, cannot encourage this on safety issues. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I noticed that my "suggestion" that Cntrysngr should get a marine starter and his "sprayed" unit would not be safe, did not get noticed. Vipzach had to point out his Family was in danger, before he got the message.

Waterone1 - When you said something about the seals, it didn't occur to me to think about sparks...I thought you just meant moisture getting in...that's why I didn't think anything of your comment. vipzach opened my eyes by telling me I would be taking my life, and others, into my hands. complete  (eye opener)

John, I talked to the guys at AZ, the manager there, and he said that what VIP wrote is absolutely true. If he had been there, he wouldn't have sold me the starter. Marine starters are sealed from allowing sparks to escape into the bilge where fumes and or gas could be. Safety is a huge concern of mine, and I feel MUCH better spending a measly $15 on a remanufactured marine starter than a remanufactured automotive starter. In fact, if I hadnt' recently purchased a FF and GPS, I probably would have gone with a brand new one at $286! But alas, the wallet was pretty empty by the time I went to get the starter. (Not something I had planned on replacing this year!)

Thanks again guys for all the help! I'm looking forward to a SAFE weekend!

Waterone1 seems to be implying that internal seals are better than external. Under most circumstances I agree.

My point was that you can take an automotive component and convert it (almost all the time) to marine by sealing it, either utilising internal seals (sometimes) or an external sealing compound (usually). The added advantage of an external sealing compound is that it seals bolt and screw holes that otherwise would not be sealed by internal seals.

The same way you can paint a sealing compound onto electrical connections in the same area that contains the 'marine' starter, alternator, coils, sparkplugs etc.
