Satellite TV receiver.

I have purchased a second satellite reveiver for the home, I will loop it through the one I allready have. The question is do you turn on the power to the LNB on each unit or is it sufficienmt to just have one of the units with LNB power on? thanks dm

I was under the impression that each receiver had its own card and its own stuff and had to be activated. What do you mean "loop it through" the other one?

What I am doing is linking 2 x receivers to one dish, ie cable from dish to #1 and than cable from #1 to #2 (ie looping through 1st receiver), it is free to air TV so no cards or anything needed.

Each receiver needs to be activated to receive the signal. There is no looping from one receiver to another. The antenna signal goes through a special splitter so that the LNB can get turned on.

What service do you have?

No, that wont work.
You would need a dual LNB and run a seperate wire from each receiver to each input on the LNB.

When you switch channels on a sat receiver the receiver sends an electrical pulse to the LNB, and it will be either positive or negative depending on the channel. That signal needs to go straight to the LNB, not through a receiver or splitter.

BTW, dual Lnb's (even quad lnb's) can be found pretty cheap on ebay.

Not sure what satellite service this is but dual LNBs are typically used for antennas that aim at two satellites. Doesn't matter how many receivers you have.

Correct, and I hope I didnt confuse the original poster by saying 'dual lnb's' when I was refering to a lnb with dual inputs.

Something like that would allow you to hook up 2 receivers to one dish.
Actually, the lnb you have now may have 2 inputs already...you may want to check.

thanks for the help, although the two receivers seem to work happily "daisy chained" I bought a splitter so there are no complications and we now have tv.... all I need is the time to watch it now..ha!

A splitter won't work either you need a separate cable. Satellite LNBs use two voltages 13 and 18 volts. This is what switches the LNB from horizontal to vertical polarizations. Splitters and feed through interfere with this. There will be no problem when both receivers are trying to do the same thing. But switch one receiver to a channel that requires the opposite polarity and one of them will not work.

Dead on the money! Each receiver must have a dedicated line to the dish or multi-switch.
I worked for Directv for several years and installed these systems.

Absolutely. Separate co-ax for each receiver. No "splitters" in the system and a separate feed from the LNB to each receiver. If watching multiple sat's on the receiver then a DiseqC switch must be used.

I think he's...gasp...watching the 'real', free fta (free-to-air) channels. Not the 'good' ones that are down from everything I have seen.

That's what I thought too. We had DishNetwork a few years back at our cabin and they did have a deal wherein you only had to run one cable and then they had a second receiver that would link through the original one, but they wanted an arm and a leg for it. Apparently it worked through the first receiver's HU card, and I'm not sure they even use those anymore.

I just remember digging a bunch of trenches and what a PITA it was to have even 2 TV's on that system.

I would imagine so. If I recall correctly it was wireless to boot.
