How can I tell if my foam is saturated and needs replaced? The deck is rotted, but the foam appears to be OK. I made a few gouges in it, and it seems to be dry, but I want to make sure before I cover it up. Its a 16' Bayliner Capri.

Re: Saturated foam

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if your deck is rotting then you most likely have waterlogged foam. This weekend i started taking the floor out of my inherited 67 larson. First cores in the foam seemed to suggest that I had no waterlogging. Then i found the water. I ended up removing about 100 pounds of water from the front and one stringer box. Still have one stringer to do. The best thing is to pull the foam in my humble opinion. The experience on this board has convinced me to try to do it right the first time. It sucks having to spend the time and money but in the end i won't have to redo it next year or the year after. good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Saturated foam Now WHat??

Re: Saturated foam Now WHat??

I have been pulling old carpet off my Fisher MV14.. I have found in the rear half wet damp foam.. I am going to have to try to pull up the aluminum floor and get at all the foam.. When I take it out what do I out back in?? I seen the Noodle trick, What about the 2" blue Dow building faom??
I just did not want to do all this work but I think the wet foam is adding some weight I am trying to get rid of!!!
So some one please let me know what they are using..
THanks:

Re: Saturated foam

With all the foam now out of my larson, the boat weighs 344lbs less. That should make a huge difference in planing, fuel economy, etc. That stuff sure id deceiving.

larry, welcome to i boats.

when you have a question its allways better to start a new thread, it gets confusing, and the orgional poster's question sometimes gets buried....

since his was answered,

the standard way to replace foam is 2 part pour in foam.
for innovative ideas, search boat rot, wet foam prevention. and read the whole thread. threr is 4 pages of everything from pool noodles to ping pong balls
