I have just bought a Savage 16ft, pretty sure it is the same as the boat pictured.

Would anyone know the year this model was made? Im pretty sure its an Avalon. I havent been able to find much info on these.

I also want to know if they have any wood under the floor or if its all fiberglass. Would like to remove bench seat up front and fit a better setup, but not sure how to attach to floor.
It currently has 2 swivel seats bolted to the bench, but you have to step over it to sit down, where as id like to be able to walk between the 2 seats.

Thanks

Re: Savage Avalon

the stringers will be wood.....

the deck will be wood.

you can rip out the wood bench and out pedistals in or even b2b 's......

as far as re fitting the deck.... just go over the stringers. then tab the new deck into the hull

im not sure of the year....but go to fiberglassics.com......you wiil find it there

Re: Savage Avalon

This appears to be an aussie fibreglass boat so you will probably not find anything at fiberglassics to enlighten you about it. Savage normally used a combo of fibreglass and wood to construct deck, stringers and transom judging by their larger models of similar era (avenger, escort, ensign) so this would probably be the same. Does this model actually have a flat deck though? the pics dont really show it too well. It will most likely be solid fibreglass in the sloped areas and fibreglass/wood on the flat areas. My best guess on the year would be early 70's, the avalons were usually 14ft though not 16ft.

Steber is one manufacturer here that used solid fibreglass in part to build their boats.

Re: Savage Avalon

I agree with MARK1961.

The AVALON was from my memory 14ft.
I have a boat in my yard which is almost identical to the one you have pictured and it is 14ft.There is a flat floor section between 2 long side seats come buoyancy tanks. My forward thwart is identical to the picture you show, even to the mount bracket on the starboard side.

I have no makers name for my boat. There were no plates or stickers on the boat.

Try getting in touch with the company. They may still have information and/or photos of their old boats.

Good Luck.

Re: Savage Avalon

Oops, yeah i would like to fit pedistals of some sort but wasnt sure if there was going to be enough strength in the floor. I drained the lower bung and got 2 full buckets of water. Does this mean the stringers are had it?

Mark and Paul are right, i just went out and measured it and it is a 14 foot. Was advertised as a 16 foot. Didnt check it for length. Though i mainly bought it because it had upfront steering, johnson 30hp that needed minor repairs, and was cheap.

And yes that is the boat i have Paul!! Mine had the same windscreen too but it was all bent up and untidy. Was the first thing i removed, but would like to build or buy a new one. I doubt you would be able to buy a screen for these anymore?

I managed to get some pics up. Not very pretty....yet. Would like this boat to resemble the boat pictured at the top, but with some padded seats.

Thanks for your replys

DCR.
If you want a new windscreen made, there are businesses which will do that for you.

Check the yellow pages. I think you might have to have your old one so they can duplicate it. But I am not sure on that.

Good Luck.

DCR. I don't think the professionals are too expensive.
But you will need to get more information yourself as this is something I have never done.

Woodonglass's link looks interesting if you wanted to try building your own.

Re: Savage Avalon

Nice link Woodonglass! Well that doesnt look to hard. I could use my old windscreen frame as the template and bend one up. Well have a go anyway.

At the moment im sanding the hull for fresh paint. The old paint is enamel.
I sanded it back and thought id make sure there is no grease etc on it and started wiping over with wax and grease. The enamel started to dissolve.
What is the best thing to use for the final clean before applying primer?
Should i just sand, blow off with air, and paint? Or dust off with clean rag and paint? Dont really want to wet it as im afraid water may stay trapped in porous gelcoat. I will be using a high fill acrylic primer im pretty sure.

Anyway if anyone has any thoughts, your help be much appreciated.

Will try and keep updated with new pics as i progress

Re: Savage Avalon

Hi DCR. Let us know how you go with your screen build. A couple of photos of your work would be great if you could show them.

As for removing that enamel paint. Sanding is your best option. Sand the paint back to the original gel coat.
You might want to think about taking off the rub rail around the boat. This can be easy or hard depending on how it was installed. But if yours gets damaged you can always buy replacement mouldings.

Don't worry about the water issue. In fact when you finish sanding, take the boat to your local car wash and pressure wash everything you have sanded.
If you have air, compressor that is, you will have no trouble blowing out any trapped moisture in the cracks and gaps in your hull.
Regardless, it will only take a couple of days to completely dry your hull in the summer.

As for paint. I would go for 2 pak if you can spend the money.

Re: Savage Avalon

Give it a final wipe down with Acetone. I would recommend looking into Pettit Easypoxy for paint. If you will NOT be leaving your boat in the water for more than 3-4 days at a time, the Easypoxy would be a good inexpensive way to go. It's what I'm going to use, and a lot of guys here on the forum have used it with GREAT success.

I'm just sayin...:D

ACETONE. Good call Woodonglass.

The fibreglassers best friend. Use it often to wipe down ALL surfaces you are working on.

Read safety instructions if you have never used Acetone before.

DCR. If the above link works, this is the Savage Avalon I have been familiar with for many years now.

The boat you and I have, is definitely, not one of these boats.

But I cannot identify mine. I don't really care as it is a nice shape and I intend to gut the boat eventually and turn it into a trout fishing boat for Tasmanian lakes.

Paul.

I think the one in the link is just a later model avalon, there is also another one or two there that look slighty different again to the highlighted one, just different versions of the model made at later time, they had anchorwells also so thats a sure sign that they are later models. You both have earlier model avalons imo.

Re: Savage Avalon

Hi Mark.

Thanks for your reply.
My old memory only goes back to the late 60's, when I left school.

Do you have any way of identifying the old boats we have.
Especially the original production year. ???????

Thanks

Paul.

Re: Savage Avalon

I hope this thread continues.

There is very little info on the older boats in Aus.

We seem to be a throw away society here.

Personally, I love some of the old boats. They can beat a new boat often, if they are upgraded in a few areas.

Just my passion, after many years of boat building.

Re: Savage Avalon

Someone wil have more info. Surely there would be some of them about.

Things have slowed a little this week. Not enough time, too busy at work. But it will be going ahead.

But ive put new rollers on the trailer, fiberglassed a hole in the hull and filled various scratches, bought new steering wheel.

So whats the go with the acetone? Wouldnt that just dissolve the enamal just like wax and grease remover? (Havent tried it obviously) Would i be better off using dishwashing liquid to clean it and then dry it off? Pretty sure that would leave no residue?
Thinking i may need an isolator to seal the enamel and then spray the filler primer.

I will be using 2pak and its not cheap so i want to make sure the base is good.

Hey Paul rip your floor out so i can see whats in there :)
