Hey Starcraft guys. I think its time to part ways with my Holiday 18'. I don't have time for it and have lost ambition in figuring out the engine timing issue which I have posted here:

Any input regarding the timing issue (be gentle ) or the price would be appreciated.

A paint job and the timing issue is all this boats needs. Interior work would be minimal.

If the 140 is a GMC or Chev the distributor has weights under the internal plate that allow for the advance of the engine, I had the same engine in my last boat and that was not working which made it miss at certan speeds and the ,engine heated up at higher RPN just FYI. That boat here on the west coast would cost 4 times what you are asking. the trailer is worth the price. OUCH wish I could drive back East to pick up a couple boats and resale here. Oh Well. Ed

Thanks for your reply Pugetsound. Its a GM. I pulled the distributor plate off and everthing seemed to move free and in working order. Is there a way to tell if a weight is missing? The only thing I haven't changed is the distributor. I hate to throw another $150 at this with being fairly sure.

I'll look at it again.

When you turn the dist ,when out, the hinged thing moves in and out. also the age on the engine it may be worn on the shaft which will cause it to wobble as mine did . I had it sent in to evaluate and then repair, it was only as I recall about 100 to fix . Way cheaper than a new boat LOL good luck wish I was in your area I would buy it in a heart beat. I prefer OB but could change it fairly inexpensive. Easier to toss an outboard and replace than some of the Inboard units. Your boat seems to be in prime condition .

I will pull the distributor and have someone smarter than me look at it.

I've always wanted to see that side of the country....maybe we could work something out.

Seriously, I have actually considered tossing an outboard on the boat. The I/O takes up a ton of room. Pulling the outdrive and motor is no trouble as I have already done the outdrive (twice).

I knew you guys were gonna start talking me out of this. It's almost bow season you know.

Unless you get the old Iron Horse running right replacing with a outboard would be my next or mabey only choice. Have you priced the newer aluminum hull boats with any thing in them. Scare you to death. LOL Ed

I definately have. That's why I have kept maintaining this boat for 10 years. I like to do alot of things and have a lot of stuff, so my toys generally have the following criteria:

1. cheap
2. old
3. needs work

Now that I think about it, that actually describes me. :redface:

Another possibility for the timing is that the timing belt could be slightly stretched out. When I was in high school I had an Impala that was tough to start and had to be cranked forever. When it DID start it ran choppy here and there. We gave the car to a friend of mine who owned a garage and he took the motor out. When he was tearing it down, he noticed the timing chain had stretched.
