My 67 y.o. cousin called today and was telling me about a "sweet deal" on a 13 y.o. fiberglass fish 'n' ski that has been sitting uncovered outdoors for over 3 years up north. The 150hp Mercury hadn't been run during that entire time, but the package was priced at only $1,000.

Told him to RUN AWAY with utmost speed!

He knows nothing about boat repair or engines. Educated him on what it could cost him to pay somebody else to do the work and he said he'd take a pass on the deal.

WHEW! :D

It was probably an all-fiberglass boat with an engine that ran perfectly :).

He could have had someone check it out, the motor if running is worth more than that by itself, plus a trailer. I would like to see this, where is it? If the bow was raised the floors and stringers are most likely ok. If not sell the trailer and motor for a nice profit!

that's fine and good for us salts. but a novice, it would not recommend it. motor would need atleast an impeller before sale.

The boat is in NC and I did advise him to tell the owner to sell the trailer and motor along with a free boat. However, the boat has a redneck patch in the deck, about 3 feet wide by 18 inches across, which is already rotted out. The hull is definitely not worth anything. The prior owner had been dying of cancer for a long while before putting the boat in the backyard to rot. Probably no maintenance for at least 5 years.

good job !!!!!!

some folks don't understand, there are DEALS that aren't. in many cases, the seller could pay you to take the boat and you would still go in the hole.

you didn't say, but was he even looking for a boat in the first place, or looking at this one because the price seemed attractive?

any way T D is correct.

I wasn't aware that he'd been looking. I think he was doing it as a favor for his landlady. The boat had belonged to her son.
