Was on way to jobsite and stopped to look at F250, 4x4, ext cab, 1995, 302 V8, auto, tow pkg. good body, no rust some dings. Was def. a work truck but not bad shape. Only thing is has 228,000 miles on it and all powertrain orig., Runs good(had to jump batt. - been sittin 6 mo.)no smoke or leaks, tranny shifts fine(needs drain and flush), radiator was dry(easy fix) turned on AC and worked but looks like clutch in AC fried, smoked and sqeauled. Told him Id want mech. to look at it, fix AC and rad.. He has $7500 price tag on it, employyee who showed me truck said he'd prob. go down to 3 or 4 K. Im thinkin with those miles I'd offer maybe 3K. I know the 302 is an extremely good and long lasting engine too. How many more miles you think I could get out of motor, etc. Thanks,

Heinz,

It's not worth $7,500.00, that's for sure.

The 302 is a good engine. About the only issues were the timing chain and an occasional rear main seal.

I wasn't aware F250s came with 302s, its supposed to be a 3/4 ton truck. Interesting. $7500 is too much, especially with the things that are wrong. There has to be a reason why the radiator was dry, I would definately look into it. Thats a fair amount of miles on it, you'll need to check everything really well. Did you drive it in 4 wheel drive to make sure there isn't any t-case or front axle issues?

I am almost pos. its a 302, no stickers saying it isnt, I know a Ford samll block and this is it. (w/o running vin)I think heads would be lots bigger for a 351. Didnt drive yet, (bat), but runs and shifts good. Thanks, Heinz

A lot of vehicles are capable of high miles and continue to perform well.
However, there is a point when reliability goes out the window.

that is a LOT of miles

I've got an '88 minivan with 215,000 miles... it's made it this far, it still runs good, but I'm surprised every time it clicks over anoker 1,000.... when something fails at this high of milage, it's the end of the vehicle, .. I can buy another van just like it cheaper than I can buy tires for the one I have!

Heinz- If it was a 351M the valve covers would be bigger. A 351 Windsor (which is what is in my 89 F250) has the same valve cover as a 302. They essentially look the same, the 351 has a 1/2 inch higher deck and about 1 1/2 inch wider intake.

I would be more concerned with the front end parts. Engines last long with the right maintenance, but those suspension parts get neglected more than anything. Check the tread wear pattern on the front tires for proper alignment. I know it is easy to put a grand into the front end to get it like new again.

IMHO the 300 6cyl is just as strong as the 302. My close friend has the 300 in his F250 and plows as much snow as an 8 cylinder. Gets a tad better mileage also.
