When I installed my San Juan Engineering heat exchanger on my 5.7 SBC they required that a bypass hose be connected between the thermostat housing \ crossover on the manifold and the water pump. Since I don't run a heater, I would like to do away with this hose. Is this OK?

Wouldn't the engine coolant just warm up a little quicker?

it wouldnt make a deal of difference to how long it takes for the engine to warm up.. not without a heater in line.. i think the idea is to stop too much back pressure being generated by the pump working against a full stop.. whether this is necessary or not i have no idea..

trog100

hello
it prevents the water in the heads from boiling while waiting on the heat convection to open the t-stat and allows a more even heating of the water and metal parts. use it or not is up to you.
some do it your selfers cant seem to get it right even with instructions?

Re: SBC Bypass hose

Thanks for the input. That makes since. I am not as familiar with the SBC as I am with Oldsmobile V8 engines. Olds thermostat housings have the bypass built in and so I have never had to contemplate this issue in the past. I had read some where that the bypass wasn't necessary, but usually if the instructions say to do something there is a reason. I am an ASE certified tech and self tought marine mechanic. Your never too old to learn something new if you keep an open mind.
