I have a 1996 mercruiser 5.7 with a one piece rear main seal, my question is, is there a difference between the older 2 piece seal and the one piece, with the oil pan. i have an older oil pan and would like to know if i can just use that. the pan on the motor in the boat is rusted and leaking. thanks

Yes, Big Difference. the one piece is different size/style on backside for one. check yards or craigslist for another pan.

I am pretty sure they're different.............check ebay, you can find one on there pretty cheap. I put a couple of coats of rustoleum on mine before I reinstalled the engine in the boat.

Re: SBC oil pan

sbc oil pans are as follows. 79 and earlier are 2pc, but different from the 80-85 2pc rear main. 86-95 were one piece, but changed again with the intruduction of the vortec in 96 which is also a 1pc rear main. You can get on ebay for around $60-$80 I believe. Just makes sure it's a marine pan, cuz it will be a little deeper to accomodate the windage tray.

mine is a 96, so is mine a vortech motor? it is still 2bbl carb, i thought all vortec motors had mpi? so a normal pan off a car or truck wont work??

Hard to say about the oil pan off of a car or truck. Some do some don't work. The problem is, they have to be the right style so your dipstick will attach and be accurate.

And no, not all Vortec marine engines are EFI.
