Hello all,

I am pretty sure I know the answer to this questions but I am hoping someone might have another. This kinda jumps around but here we go..

My father in-law gave me the Airslot I have after he had done some work for a lady and she could not pay. She gave him her deceased brother's boat, my boat.

I was living in Lousiana and now in SC. I have an notorized afidavit stating that the owner is dead and she owns the boat. I have a title for the boat and the trailer both signed over to me. I have a bill of sale with her signature selling it to me, however it is not notarized.

I have a copy of her drivers license and passport with the signatures matching. The reason I say this is that in Lousiana I was able to get a title on a vehicle w/o a bill of sale but a copy of the DL.

Does anyone know in SC can I get it titled with the documents I have or will I have to get it notarized?

thanks,
Gerry

I believe that you should be able to get it processed. Not 100% sure but i believe that you can. Good luck.

Since the boat was "purcahsed" in Lousiana, S.C. should accept the paper work if it complies with Lousiana requirements.

a lot will depend on the mood of the person behind the desk. Be nice. Grovel.

I caught some grief in Virginia when my bill of sale for the trailer didn't give its color and serial number--even though the title was signed over, which is all that is required. Those clerks make their own law.

So true!
Be glad it is not NC....This is one of the toughest states in the US to get things titled.

I bought my travel trailer from a dealer in NY.I had all the documents including the certificate of origin from the factory.
Everything signed,notarized and legit.
The girl behind the desk at the DMV said NO,You get no tags without the title.
I explained it was financed and the bank has the title, still NO!

They make the rules as they go along!

Just be nice and see what happens. SC is a little bit of a pain if you don't have the "normal" paperwork in good order (you might, I've never had that situation). Worst case scenario is that a friend in Looosiana will have to register the boat and then sell it to you.

Here's a link to SC's DNR and boat registration requirements.....doesn't look terrible but certainly not easy like in GA. (GA requires on "used" boats and trailers to have either a notarized bill of sale or in lieu of that, simply a witnessed bill of sale. No title is provided in GA nor required. Motors are not registered, titled, or anything else.)

http://www.dnr.sc.gov/boating/registration.html

(Your pertinent sections are #'s 4, 5, and 7. Trailer requirements are probably on SC's DMV site.)
