Xcusme, can you be a little more specific as to where to copy the msconfig.exe file to in W2K? I don't have a Winnt file on my 2k machine. also when I put it where it belongs will I still access it in the Run box like in XP?

Sorry 'bout that last post, I typed it out pretty fast.<br /><br />Goto to last link in my last post and grab the file msconfig.exe. Place the file in the FOLDER called WINNT (C:\WINNT). <br /><br />Since C:\WINNT is the main operating system folder, the RUN command should work just fine and find/run the file.

Deputydawg I tried Kagee way of doing it then tried yours but the window that comes down on my 98SE is as follows:<br /> Explorer<br /> Avgemc<br /> Zlclient<br /> Memcard<br /> Netddle<br /> Avgcc<br /> Lxsupmon<br /> Systray<br /> Starter<br /> Lxbsppls.<br />I do not have processes running. Is there someting else I can use from the window?

The items you have listed are running, malibu. DD says you can shut everything down but Systray and Explorer. I'll let someone else comment on the correctness of it. I just ran defrag using the MSConfig method listed above. Other than having to restart, it worked real good.

Tks boom. I misunderstood what was written(again). Which system did you like the best Boom? Kagee or Deputydawg? Was either one easier than the other to do ?

I used KG's only because I was afraid of disabling the items in the above list that I'm not familiar with. Using KG's method, you have to reboot after selecting diagnostic boot, then when you are done you have to reselect Normal startup and reboot again.<br /><br />With DD's method, I think you need to go back and reselect the start up items after you defrag then reboot. I think KG's is simpler.

I had always used DD's method successfully till I got this machine, it would never defrag, just start and restart, never got past about 3%. Using Kg's method worked. Took 4 hrs, but it worked just fine. Chief

If you do go through and end task on everything in the list, when you re-start they will come back on with no trouble.

Tks DD for letting us know about the restart. I am like Boomyal as I don't like trying things I am not familar with. This way sounds easy.

It's possible to still have someting running in the background with DD's method.<br /><br />MSCONFIG will only load bare necessities to get windows up.<br /><br />Cheif... <br /><br />Glad it worked. I always run it about once every three or four months. Keeps the drives in shape and the system running smoother.<br /><br />It took so long for you most likely because you had not run it right for so long. Plus the larger your hard drive, the longer it takes.<br />I have all three of my drives partioned into smaller 30-40 GB partitions. They defrag much faster that way in addition to providing extra data protection.

KG....if you do it DD's way, wouldn't you know something is running as you may restart over and over or would it even bother it? My firewall wall(ZA) really effects me. I suppose the Antivirus program will as well. I am thinking out loud!

One more thing to consider, while we're on the subject. If you have any utilities to purge your internet browser caches, delete temp files etc. Be sure to empty the recycle bin before you do the defrag. Files in the recycle folder will be a part of the defrag process and will take extra time to defrag. So, empty the 'trash' before you defrag.

Wow Xcusme! There really is alot to consider when you do the defrag/scan. I thought this would be a straight forward answear/question but to my delight it wasn't. What a wealth of knowledge I am getting from you folks.

Yes, Xcuseme is right, and I should have brought that up.<br /><br />Clean up any folders of unwanted files prior to defrag. It will make better use of the drive space.
