All I can tell you is that it came from the factory with two wires. Who absconded with the other wire, I don't know. Anyhow, in order to install it you have to pull the flywheel, then remove the magneto from the motor and turn it (the magneto) upside down for access to the screws and clamps on the bottom. You also have to remove one of the coils. The wires go to the breaker points, just like the diagram says. The wires are not common wire, they have fine copper strands for flexibility. But I suppose common wire will work for awhile.

Outstanding. I don't think there is a safety switch either. Just found the engine diagram of where it is supposed to be and there is nothing there, I don't understand what someone did to this and how. I understand the way it came from the factory is with another wire from the magneto going to a stop button that isn't there either, is there a way to run a kill switch and not have to take the flywheel and magneto off?

One last question (I think) I have the opportunity to get a Sea King 40 hp Johnson engine and from what I can see and find online it looks like it shares alot of parts with the 28hp engine. Will the 40hp have the same magneto and setup as my 28hp? It is a complete engine with stop button and everything that I could swap over.

Thanks

That magneto was used for over 25 years on a multitude of models. Known as the OMC Universal Magneto. But you didn't say what year the 40 is. And do you mean "Sea Horse"? Sea King is a Montgomery Ward brand name.

Its a 1961 Johnson that says Sea King on the side of it. I'm guessing sea king is the make of the boat and someone put the name on their engine as well. That's the same boat that I'm rebuilding right now is why I am assuming that.

If you need to run a wire for the kill switch, then you gotta take the flywheel off. Not a big deal. Make sure you torque the nut properly before attempting to run it again. I believe it is 105 ft. lbs. on that, but verify it against a manual first.

Well, 1961 Wards Sea Kings used the same mag. So no problem with that part.

That's what I thought, looked up the part number in a catalog and it matched but just wanted to make sure. Thanks alot for your help. I'm getting a great deal on a complete engine so I will change out the entire ignition system with stop button and everything

Today I got the flywheel off of both my engine and the donor/example engine. As a refresher, my problem is that I only have one wire coming down from the magneto. Once I got the flywheel I off I see that there isn't even a hole drilled in the plate by the coil for a wire to go through. Were these holes factory drilled or did someone add them? If they are factory, why would I only have one wire coming from the magneto? Here are pics, the crappy looking engine is the donor engine and the cleanish one is the one I'm working on

Getting a bit more confused. Looked up the magneto group on the diagrams and It's only showing one coil??? Anyone have any input?

Another question would be, without a stop button or kill switch, how did someone turn this engine off? The way I understand it, you have to have a wire to each coil in order to kill the engine. Is it possible to run a wire from one coil to the other wire that goes through the plate and to the vacuum cut out switch and have the same effect with a switch?

????-------The picture shows one coil , that was done to avoid clutter in the picture.----------It uses one coil for each cylinder !!!!--------Pulling the choke on is a very acceptable way to stop one of these motors.

I figured that, when I just looked at the parts listing it showed it required 2. I don't my carb doesn't have a choke, it doesn't have the typical can on the bottom of the carb
