As promised here are the test results.
Pretty interesting. The highest levels of salinity were in the Caribbean. The lowest levels were in the northern latitudes.
Problem Statement

Does the salinity level of ocean water vary around
the world?

Based on salt water aquarium recommendations, the
optimum level of water salinity for ocean marine life is
between 2.7% and 3.3%. The assumption is that the
salinity levels of the world’s oceans would fall within this range.

This project will determine if ocean salinity varies beyond this optimum range.

Hypothesis

If salinity levels differ significantly in ocean water samples taken from various oceans and locations, then it would conclude salinity levels are affected by climate,
location, and other factors. The results of this experiment are expected to show ocean salinity to not vary beyond 2.7% and 3.3%.

http://
web page

Re: Science Fair Results

Okay, I guess I don't know how to add a photo. I thought I did it right but obviously did not. I put the charts on photobucket and tried to include them here.

Well - you probably don't want to look at a chart anyway. The best news is she got a blue ribbon and a first place medal and the project goes on to regionals at Texas Tech - thanks to all of you for your help!

Re: Science Fair Results

Link:
Actually there was a little difference. Here is the table.
LOCATION SALINITY
A = Distilled Water (Control) 0
B = Tap Water (Control) .6
C = Cozumel, Mexico 3.9
D = Roatan, Honduras 3.8
E = Belize City, Belize 3.6
F = Seaside, Oregon 3.5
G = Point Defiance, Washington 2.8
H = Salters Point, Washington 2.9
I = Browns Point, Washington 2.8
J = Mission Bay, California 3.5
K = LaJolla, California 3.4
L = Malibu, California 3.6

It does not look all that different in this form but look at this photo of the hydrometer and each .1 percent is a fairly substantial difference.

Thanks for the pic's Sailor.
Great follow up.
Mother in law was just asking over dinner last night if I had heard back from you on the project.

The bet wound up being a draw!
Going to print this thread out later this evening so I can take a copy of it to her.
