I bought some scope mounts and rings for my Savage 200 30-06 today. I basically went to a gun store and told the guy to set me up with what i needed. He sold me two mounts and a set of rings. I notice that one mount is thicker than the other. Could someone tell me why, and also which one should go in front or in back. A friend of mine says the thicker one goes in front because of the releif on the scope is bigger. He wasn't sure so I thought I would ask here.

I don't know, but when you mount it, use threadlocker and when you have the screws snug, tap the head of the driver with a small hammer while turning the screw the last little bit, it will make it just a little bit tighter.

Re: scope mounts

The thicker one goes in the rear. The thinner one goes in front. The reason is,the barrel screws in the front of the receiver and needs all the support it can get.The rear of the receiver on top has been ground down(probably for looks).

Re: scope mounts

If you mount the bases in the wrong place, when you try to mount the scope it wont line up, you cant go wrong.

Re: scope mounts

If the top of the rear reciever is lower than the top of the front reciever, then the higher base goes on the rear. Some recievers are the same height front and rear. What brand base and rings did you buy? Some 1000yd shooters have the high base in front

They are weaver mounts and weaver rings.

Re: scope mounts

Are they slot head screws or torque heads? Is the rear of your reciever lower than the front?

Re: scope mounts

They are slot head screws I actually just finished mounting with the thicker base in front. The reciever in the front sits higher. It doesn't look right. It was a very tight squeeze to get on, left no room foe eye relief adjustment, but I don't think Ill need to. It seems to be in goode shape as far as eye relief is concerned. I am still concerned about the different thickness of mounts. It just seems like it would be better if both bases were the same, but I am not the expert.

Re: scope mounts

Sounds like you have the bases backward.

Re: scope mounts

with your rings on the scope , the lower half of the ring will lay in the bases perfect. If it dont feel solid when you set the scope and rings down on th e mounted bases , its wrong. you will know when its right. if the bases are wrong it will feel wrong. trust me.

Re: scope mounts

I don't see a model 200 on the Savage web. The hunter models I see appear to be the same height on the reciever front and rear. If your rifles reciever is level, then your bases should be the same height.

You can find that model on the savage site, under the stevens tab.
