Scored cylinder after hone

Hey,

I recently had my cylinders honed on a 73 40hp evinrude after the top cylinder heat seized because of a water pump issue. I don't have any clearances available or a ring gap to share at the moment but was wondering if this result looks ok to run or if it should be rebored with os pistons and rings. Any input would be great.

I have seen good running motors with much worse but your ring gaps will tell you the real story.

Possible there was some dirt in the piston ring gap during reassembly. I've had marks that were similar on one of my engines. After broken in, it ran just fine. You will find that over time, exhaust gas will run down the marks. Sort of a blow-by effect. Over a long period of time, the exhaust gas will continue to blow down the vertical mark on the cylinder, eventually, reaching the skirt of the piston. Over many, many hours you may develop more carbon around the ringsets and the skirt of the piston. I'd run it for now, worry about overboring (to get rid of the marks) for your next overhaul.

Thanks for the input gents. I'm hoping to get by with the cylinder in its current condition so I still have the option of boring down the road if another incident happens.

Like Ed stated....that cylinder wont live long a combustion will blow pass ring in that scuffed area and erode piston...bore it and enjoy it .

If I were to run it as is for now would I still be able to do a proper bore in the future or could the cylinders or crankshaft/bearings be damaged from blow by?
