Scott Atwater Firestone 7.5?

I was at work today and a guy that comes in all the time, always with a bunch of random stuff in the back of his truck, came in and there was an old outboard on top of the pile of stuff in back. I looked at it for a minute and walked away. Went back and checked if it was turning over and had compression and it did, the guy asked if I wanted it I said I was thinking about it and he said he wanted $30 for it, I told him I would give him $20 for it, he said yes so I hauled it out of the back of his truck.

When I got home I gave it a quick bath and made room for it on the stand next to the Gale. I looked up the carb number, only words left on the whole motor, online which is Tillotson AJ18A, and found references to Firestone and Scott Atwater 7.5hp motors. The old paint on the tank is Gold, which reinforces the idea that its a Scott Atwater.

Anyway, here are some pics of the beast, aside from the dent in the tank its not that scary looking.

Any info would be helpful, and I know you guys well know :D

Nice character mark on the tank. Anyhow, the AJ-18A was used on 1946-48 Firestone 7.5hp motors, models 469, 479, and 489. It was also used on Scott-Atwater 7.5hp motors 1947 model 473.

Thanks F R, that well help me in searches, I check the ignition and both coils fire but I well need to pull the wheel and check of course, do you know the torque spec for the flywheel nut by chance? I also pulled the front cover off the bottom of the lower unit and the gears look good with no rust but no grease in the lower unit though.

Yep that's an old Scotty. Google Brian Wilcox for an impeller.

I was looking over the motor again and all of the parts seem to have a 465-xxxx part number, does that mean it is a 465 not a 469 or is that just the way the parts are numbered? Where would the impeller be on this one, its not in the lower unit, I didn't see it, is it like on my Gale and between the leg and lower unit?

That prefix on Scott part numbers indicates the model number where that particular part was first used. It may also be used on dozens of subsequent models.

The pump is at the anti-cavitation plate. Some have wobbler impellers, some have rotary. I think yours is rotary, but don't try to go to the bank on that.

Yeah I was figuring it was in the cavitation plate, the intake for it is in the front of the cavitation plate, is there any chance that the impeller might be used on one of the newer engines or well I have to just have to have one made by Brian Wilcox? Also, any idea what the torque spec is for the flywheel nut for when I pull the flywheel off to check the coils? I well pull the lower unit off tomorrow and have a look at the impeller.

Thanks again for all the info, I can always rely on you guys for good information

I went and picked up some bits for this one today, I got some new style spark plug boots and ends to replace the old ring terminal style ones. I also got some new plugs, a new inline fuel filter and fuel line and a tube of Lubriplate 105 engine grease for the lower unit.

I puller the lower unit off and it does have a wobbler style impeller, it looks in serviceable condition as well, so I well just make some new gaskets for the lower unit and the front cover and run it as is for now and order a new impeller to have on the shelf.

I also pulled the tank and and cleaned out the carb, not too bad at all, the float doesn't look bad either so I cleaned it all up and put the top cover back on. I picked up a new inline filter and fuel line so I well install that when the tank, hopefully with a few less dents, goes back on.

I also changed the plugs and put the new plug wire boots and connectors on.

Nice work...you're making good progress. Scott's are sturdy, reliable motors.

Yeah the thing is actually in pretty good shape, just looks nasty, my Dad says it looks like it was hauled out of the Black Lagoon :D I might see if I can track down another fuel cap for the tank tomorrow and get some Alcohol to clean out the tank with, might just get a gallon of denatured alcohol instead of rubbing alcohol.

I went to the scrap metal yard today and wouldn't you know it, they had a Firestone 3.5hp sitting there, unfortunately the tank was in worse condition them mine, if you can believe it, otherwise I would have grabbed the whole thing. I did grab the fuel cap and throttle lever rubber bit off of it though.

I found a manual on Ebay for this motor for $6 so picked that up, I think I am going to try and wait to see if I can find another tank for this motor instead of trying to fix this one.
