Hello:

Went to buy a used bench grinder off of an old man in town. Went into the garage with checkbook, walked out with bench grinder - and an old Scott Atwater 16hp outboard with the bail-a-matic attachment (which I hear are a problem, but hey for $25 can't turn it down). I asked when the last time he used it and it took him awhile but he remembered. It was 1952, right before he shipped overseas in the army. He got back and it sat in his garage ever since. I pulled the rope and it turned over and sounded real good. Gears work fine too. But my question is: What year is this thing? S/n 39454484; 16hp

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tsutter you have a 1954 model there. The problem with the bail-o- matic was they sucked up derbis and mucked up the the bilge side of the water pump, which shortly mucked up the cooling water side. Other than that they were great motors. Scott Atwater was a top player in the business in the 50's and had, still has a loyal following.
