Based on the responses on the first Scouting thread, I just wanted to conduct a poll.

We put our son in cubs because we were new to the area. He made lots of friends wile he was there. It also taught him that if he wants something and or if he has a fear of having to do something that he could achieve it by working at it. The biggest fear he had was the rip line and when he had to go across the valley on it. Once he got the courage up and did it you could not get him of the thing.He talked about it for weeks.

I was a Boy Scout and got a lot out of it.

My daughter is a Girl Scout and loves it.
She does other things like soccer and gymnastics, but learns more about community and citizenship from the Scouts.

Have 3 girls, so no boy scouts for me, but I was one many moons ago, don't ask, and it was ok.
Camping out and doing knots, building campfires, finding arrowheads, swimming, boating etc was about all we did.
Nowadays they do everything.
Times do change.

As much as i liked it, and was a leader It WAS ALLWAYS me and one other parent doing everything with a LOT of people droping off and picking up there childern

I think it depends a lot on the area.

Rich kids troops have great parents and plenty of volunteers.

Poor kids troops struggle to get volunteers and a lot of single parents dump the kids there to get a break or to try to get them some disipline. My troop had several "problem" kids when I was a leader.

I can't answer that because I don't feel the way the "no" answer is listed. I was no boy scout, I played Little League Football which I really liked (played to the end of High School).

Now, as a parent, I have two daughters and a son, I would not be against them becoming a scout, but I could care less if they didn't want to be either. I would like to see all of them take up sports, but that's up to them, too.

Yep, that's why the leader need to be a Florence Nightengale.

I could not have been a leader for that same reason, but I was always amazed at the leader of my son's troop, he seemed unfazed by what you mentioned. He was on a mission and a good missionary he was.

Yep, seen that too. For the most part my sons troop was made up of solid middle class boys. Even if the parents did not participate you knew the kids had some foundation. Then the Church that sponsored the Troop started 'reaching out to the neighborhood', for a short period we began to see a few boys that had Zero parental backing. They did not stick around very long and caused a lot of hair pulling while they were there. It was unfortunate. Many of these boys were the ones who would have benefited the most but the leader are only human, have their own lives to live and were not capable over overcoming the deficit.

With my Boy Scout troop, I say it is very beneficial. But, my sisters girl scout troop wasn't anything special.

With boy scouts, it is all boy led, so during meetings and trips, leaders just goof off, and make sure everything is under control. Only the REAL disapline problems make it to them. They do a lot of the footwork, after we decide where we want to go on a trip, so they find out the availability of the campsite, or activity, and find out the cost. The rest is up to us, and it teaches leadership a lot more than something that is actually led by adults.

Speaking of the BSA
When i did little league baseball with my kids it was funny how some of the parents would barely slow down enough to alow there kids to get out of the car before they would speed away.This was all in a attempt to get out of helping with the game. Then they would sneak back and watch the game.

Just for you single people out there its a great place to meet people. I saw so many people hook up at these games it was unreal. So for all you single guys out there check those single yummy mommys out.

i'm a scout drop out. althought it was 50 years ago. as said it was then in my area the one afternoon sitter. i quit, and refused to go. as i have learn from other parents it is much improved over the years. although, i was in an elite neighborhood, where the parents were too busy for their kids. Boating was our only family activity, as Dad liked it.

Answers one and three are not mutually exclusive to each other.

If you are interested in going find the troop that has the most Eagle scouts in it's history. That's a good indication of parental involvement. Attend the troop meeting of two or three in your area and watch them in action. Remember, the kids are supposed to conduct a majority of the business of the troop.
