Scratching my head on this one.

Little Johnny bought 3 fishing poles for $30 and received a 4th one free. A nice guy that he was; sold them to three of his "bestest" friends for $10 each. A month later, he received a $5 rebate in the mail. He thought about dividing the $5 between the three friend but didn't know how to divide 5 into 3 equally so he gave each friend $1 and kept $2. Needless to say, he bought a gift for little Suzy with the $2. So as it stands, the three friends paid a total of $27 plus the $2 Johnny kept after the rebate. Mathematically applied $27+ $2 = $29. My question is this: how is it possible that the friends paid $30 to begin with? Folks I am swiss!

Depends on how you look at it.Wrong or right.

Edited for clarity.

The three guys originally paid $30 for three rods. The rebate came to $5 which is subtracted from the original $30.That total is $25.Plus the $3 they recieved on rebate equals $28 plus the two that Johnny kept equals $30.

Mr. OB, you're cheating. Hmmmm I'm beginning to think OB was little Johnny. Anyhow follow the "bouncing ball". Can you give me a Mathematical explanation? Again, I'm slow. 8)

That's like the body shop that told me once, "well a 30% markup is really only 25%". And of course I said, "if it's only 25%, why is it called 30%?"

Johnny received $30 from his friends and $5.00 in the rebate. He actually received $35.00.

He gave $3 back ($1 each) and retained $32 ($27 + $5). He spent $2 on Suzy leaving his net proceeds at $30.00, the original amount! He done good!!

Crusty, i don't think you answered my question. Well the logic is that the friends paid $30 for the fishing poles. $10 a piece. After the $5 rebate, they each got $1 back which means they paid $9 each and Johnny kept $2. To sum it up, the friends paid $27. We can prove this. And Johnny kept $2. We can prove that as-well.

So the question remains. If $27 was paid by the friends and $2 was spent on Suzy, how in the world is it possible that Johnny had $30 to begin with?

Re: Scratching my head on this one.

Fact : $25 of the original $30 went to the rods.Fact : $3 was returned to them.Fact : $25 plus $3 = $28.Fact .: $28 plus the $2 that Johnny ripped off for Suzy is $30.It all depends on how you look at it.

Johnny collected $30. He continued to bank $30. The $1 he refunded to each came from the additional $5 he received as a rebate, at this point netting $32. Suzy got the $2 and Johnny never touched the original $30.

Re: Scratching my head on this one.

Try this one.A man hiking in the jungle comes to a fork in the trail. He needs to know accurate directions as to which trail to take as one will lead him to the safety of the friendly tribes camp and the other will lead him to the cannibal tribes camp. At the entrance to each of the two trails is a representative of the tribe that the road leads to.The members of one tribe "always" lies and the members of the other tribe "always" tell the truth. The hiker can't tell which one is from the friendly tribe and which one is from the lying cannibal tribe.

What "one" question could the hiker ask to either of the two tribe members to get directions to the friendly camp.

ahhh, wait a second...if the lying tribe lies and says he's the friendly tribe, then you still wouldn't know for sure...

How about this, ask each if the other tribe is friendly.....hmmm , that won't work either.......

OK, I got it, shoot everybody...and go anywhere you want.

Ask either representative "What will the other representative tell me if I ask him which is the trail to the frendly camp?"

The resultant answer will always be a lie.

Oh Techno, I paid enough attention in Accounting class to know what he meant. LIFO, FIFO, Cost, retail, it's all in where you put the numbers.

Good job BoatBuoy!

Are you from the friendly tribe down the road?

So easy even a cave man can figure it out.
