screen and shutter on carb

Looking at the manual while cleaning my carbs, I noticed that my carbs are missing the screen and shutter.

Should I order them? It is obvious that the screen keeps out large pieces of debris, but what does the shutter do?

Re: screen and shutter on carb

What model do you have, on some of the newer ones such as my 85 90hp it did not come with one since they started using the fuel enrichener valve. As to the screen keeping large debris out of the engine, I don't know how anything that large could get into the cowling anyway. The shutter is for models that use a choke. If you have the fuel enrichener valve you don't need the shutter or screen.

Thanks

I think it is an 81 115hp inline 6. I believe it has the enricher but the carb has a threaded stud where the screen and shutter would be.

Maybe someone put an older carb on it before you got it but just left off the shutter since they are not needed. To tell if you have the enrichener valve look to see if the is a soleniod valve that gets fuel from the top carb and has hoses that run into the block around the carbs. Sort of a bypass around the carbs to get fuel into the engine. You can see mine on the right of the carbs between 1 and 2 carbs in the picture.

Looks different but seems to be what we are talking about. It sits above the fuel pump. Line comes off the fuel rail to the selonoid then from the sol. to the top carb bowl.

Yep Coyote, thats it. Yours is a newer model than mine but works the same except the older ones have a bypass screw stem which will allow fuel into the engine if the coil fails.

Hey Faztbullet, it is tygon tubing. I did some research for gas and alcohol resistance before buying it. When ethenol came to our area I replaced all fuel lines from tank to carbs. Thanks for asking though.

Coyote I hope you know about the nut that is loose on the top carb or this is an old picture.
