Re: Screwdriver Opinion

Home depot sells screws that appear to be phillips but are best installed with a square tip....... go figure?

The biscrew :)

For those who just aren't sure which way they swing.

Re: Screwdriver Opinion

Robertson is my "style" of choice. Everything in my boat has been changed to them (minus the motor screws) and most things in my house are made with them. Exception of course is the electronic equipment which for some reason seems to all be Phillips. I actually discovered that my drum machine has SLOTTED screws in the back holding the rear plate on. Ewwww.

For those crazy about Robertson you can actually get computer screws in that style fom most decent computer stores. I bought a little screw-drawer of different computer sizes from case screws to MB screws. Very neat.

It's already been pointed out that there are variations on the old philips design. You have to be sure you're using the right driver in both design and size. Properly fitted, a decent driver will last a very long time. Assuming of course that you're not horsing in a fastener that should have had the right pilot hole drilled and cocking the driver so that both the screw and driver are being damaged. But most of us are guilty of picking up any old driver and if it reasonably fits in the screw, we use it.

In any tool, you get what you pay for. I have drivers with hardened tips and some that are not. To have all the various sizes in a quality driver is expensive but priceless when they work correctly for many years.

For many things, we love roberson drive, as I said. But, in many cases, we use Deck Mate brand screw. The kinda half phillips, and half square, but the come with the little blue driver bit. Real nice for most of the rough work we do. But, when it comes to furniture, and fine stuff, it is Mcfeely's square heads.
