Screwed up big time on skeg repair

Just bought a 1985 Evenrude 40 hp tiller. It had about 1/2 of the skeg gone. I do a lot of welding and decided I could fab a new one and weld in place. Everything I have read about lower unit welding is keeping things cool. I wrapped water soaked rags around the unit all the way to the point of the weld. I also us an IR heat gun and stopped every 1/2 inch to check temp and allow cool down. I never saw a temp above 180 degrees but ya you guessed it, let the unit set overnight and have a small puddle of oil coming out. Removed the prop and it appears from the inner seal. But hey, the skeg came out good!

Never replaced a seal in my life but appears there are three small bolts which I assume would be removed and the seal could be hooked with something and pulled out and a new one installed.

Am I on the right track. I know, I know, should be smarter but hindsight is always 20-20.

Also can you point me to where I can get the part number and how to order from this site. Found parts put don't see parts number breakdown. Maybe I have to buy a manual to get them.

The motor tag says E 40 TEL CO. I think that is a 1985 unit according to what I have located on the internet.

Thanks

You are going to have to remove the bearing housing (#28) by removing the 3 screws (#32) and then pull the housing. You are going to need a puller to get the bearing housing out of the lower unit. Then you can replace the 2 seals (#31). You might also think about replacing the o-rings on the screws and the o-ring on the housing.

Re: Screwed up big time on skeg repair

Thanks for the info. I think I'll head for a Evinrude repair shop. Don't have the proper seal puller and no point screwing up more what I already have. I'll stick to welding but will only do lower units removed and seals out. Lesson learned. Education always costs. Thanks for pointing me to the parts page also. Valuable info.
