Re: Screwed up big!!

Being aluminum you should be fine.

I wired in an alarm to the bilge pump so if i take on water the ear splitting scream lets me know something is wrong right away.

I once launched and ran down no wake for 15 minutes without the plug, opened the rod locker to find water swirling,"huh, that is kinda funny, OH CRAP!".

Another 2 minutes and it would have gone under so I got the alarm in before the next trip.

Re: Screwed up big!!

It's part of my routine at the ramp... I get the pliers, grab the plug out of the cup holder at the helm, go to one side take off the strap, put the plug in, take off the other strap, throw straps and pliers in the truck and drop the boat in. It's such a routine for me that I htink I would forget to put both legs in my pants before I forgot the plug...

I'm not saying I haven't done it in the past though... I backed in once and remembered I forgot it. Funny thing is though that the reason I remembered it was that the boat was also still strapped to the trailer. lol It was only in for 10 seconds and it was unreal how much water poured out!

I watched a nice boat sink after the owner launched withno plug, tied it up in his slip, and left. By the time I saw it, the deck was awash.

I drilled and tapped the head of the plug for a #8 screw. Used a short piece of wire and crimped a terminal ring on each end. Screwed the rings to the plug and put it on my key chain. Not foolprooof, but it sure helped me.

Thanks for the replies, here I thought I was the only one. Just make me mad.
New boat had it about two months. Nothing fancy 15 foot with floor, steering wheel, and some carpet. The plug hangs out the back on a wire. I took the transom saver off you think I would have seen it. Sign of old age I guess.

I have not forgotten the plug yet, but when I took my boat out for the sea trial, the broker did not realize that the input hose for the live well was not connected to the pump, and the cutoff valve was open. After running at cruising speed for about 30 min, had about 8 inches of water in the ski locker when we hit the no wake zone. Pulled the boat right away, and water was draining for about 10 min. Once it stopped, we took a look at it and found the hose disconnected.

Not my fault, but I know what to check for the future.

I actually gave my wife permission (not that she really needed it) to nag me about the plug. It seems to be natural to her, even if she sees me put the plug in she still asks me 5 or 6 times before we launch.

Did it last summer with my Sea Doo....put it in, drove around the lake awhile, then tied it up for the night......oops. $200 later it runs like a champ. I'll be honest, not all of the $200 was because of the dumping, it needed tuned up a little anyway, and I did find out that one of my fuel filters was almost completely plugged meaning I was running on basically 1 cylinder. I'll find out today what it's like to have both of them working....:)

Re: Screwed up big!!

I have forgotten the plug a few times, but my plug is a black one that stays in the hole when unscrewed. If I forget to screw it in it doesn't let much water in as it seems to sit in the hole if left unscrewed.

Last weekend I was trailering my boat and a nice Mastercraft Ski boat idled out and then came flying back to the shore through the No Wake Zone beause his feet were getting wet. As he stated the Damn mechanic forgot to put the plug in. Yeah right buddy you should have checked it.

Re: Screwed up big!!

The first time I took mine out the plug was loose. Now I make sure it's back in tight when I park it in my driveway at the end of the day. I should take the advice and let my wife nag me about it anyway. Can't ever be too sure! lol

Nothing wrong with having a good Mate,....their Captain.
