Screws backing out of rub rail?

I was polishing my boat yesterday and realized (from below looking up) the chrome rubrail is sticking out about 1/4" from the fiberglass! Concerned about water splashing through, we pulled back the rubber strip and found all the screws in that area were very loose and only seemed to stop reversing when they hit the rubber strip and couldnt go out any further!

Are these screws ALL that is fastining the top to the hull? or is their some kind of glue? We ended up caulking the entire area and torquing the screws back down and replacing the rub strip, but makes me wonder what I should do to ensure they dont back out again and that my boat stays together in one piece:facepalm:

Thanks!

Re: Screws backing out of rub rail?

You could use rivets...... or even add in screws. I hope you used 3m4000 or 5000 series sealant.

You could coat each screw thread with epoxy and screw them back in.

Dont know Chris..without pics :) ..

I dont thinks its Chrome ... are you talking about an alum RR with a rubber insert ?

Normally the hull/deck joint is fastened bye....erm.. NM.. you Need to put some pics here.

Also.. you can sugar coat your screws..but the sealant/epoxy will most likely unscrew out of the fastener.. ( Sorry Bob no offence :) ) .

YD.
