scuppers working?

i never had a boat that had scuppers and not sure how they operate. was out on the water yesterday and drifting along and there's water coming into the stern thru the scuppers. so i moved along got it out.

not happy with this at all, i do alot of drifting. the scuppers i think were made from pieces of rubber, don't think they were the factory ones.

whats going on with the scuppers??

There are different types of inserts or like a check rubber scupper inserts to allow water out but not in on the market. See pic attach. like on my boat.

A large percentage of scuppers problems are design issues.

For scuppers to work properly the deck must be above water level at all times. A lot of boats barely meet the criteria and minimal weigh on the stern puts the deck below the water line. Water intrusion soon follows. To help with the problem some manufacturers use little rubber flaps that act as a one way valve and others use a globe and ball type setup to keep the water from coming back in.

I have rubber flaps on my scuppers but my deck stays well above the water line so I don't experience any back flow into the cockpit to begin with. I understand the globe and ball works well but I don?t like the potential for growth getting in the globe and freezing the ball in place.

There are other scupper designs than the ones shown. I had ones as in this pic, but after a while, the rubber flap became slightly concave. It would let water in but right back out. Then I got smart and flipped the rubber disc around! Sometimes it's great being at the top of the food chain!

mine are well above the water line -I had to clear a pack of nasty wet cigarettes outta one-was clogged. the other has leaves in them.

On my Mako I have the self bailing deck. Its the straight drain. The idea is good but and weight on the stern and you have wet feet. I used a plug to close them most times.

Old boat had an open drain, although very small.

New boat has a large scupper that collects water from gutters along the aft deck. My scupper is missing the rubber flap, and finding one has proven tough so far. This design is very simple, but as stated before, it works best when they are well above the water line.

thanks for the input. the above the water line sounds like the best solution however, involves new boat. the existing ones were made by previous owner, will check out the new ones posted here.
