I have a bent prop shaft on my 1975 mercruiser 888. I have priced tring to fix it myself and the cost in the proper tools alone is prohibitive. I would imagine at $70 an hour its not much cheaper to get it repaired by the mechanic either. I found the SE 106 lower unit for $695. Does anyone know if these are quality units and from what i read it will bolt right up to the upper unit has anyone heard any diferent or bad things about this lower unit or drive in general.

Thanks,

Re: SE 106 lower unit

I am thinking of purchasing an SE 106 or 116, I can't remember which to replace my entire outdrive. It came highly recommended off of these forums. They also offer a 3 year warranty, and all the mercruiser parts and maintenence items will work with it, so there's what I know about them.

Re: SE 106 lower unit

I am thinking of doing the same. Bolting an aftermarket replacement lower to an OEM upper.

Comments?

Re: SE 106 lower unit

Everything i read on the wonderful wide web for the most part has the this as a good unit with the warrenty and that it will bolt right up.....so i think i will order one....my next issue or question i guess is I just bought this boat and the bent prop shaft is my own stupidity but i am really wanting to get the boat out and give it a trial run to see if there are any other issues major or minor i need to take care of...I dont have the money to order the unit right now unfortuneatly will it hurt to take the boat out withthe bent prop shaft since i am replaceing the entire lower unit anyhow?

Re: SE 106 lower unit

Just wait until you get the new lower unit. You could end up stranded or ruining other parts by running with a prop shaft that is out of spec. Escecially if the bent prop shaft creates vibrations and/or leaks drive fluid which would make your upper unit toast as well.

Just remember the breakin period you will have to follow with the drive. They have the procedure in the box when you get the LU. I am on my 8th hour of the new SE106 complete unit I purchased 3 weeks ago.

Hit a rock pile and banged the nose of the original merc. Bought just the lower. four years now behind a 4.3. Follow the break in and should be good to go. No issues at all. Not sure if they still have it, but I got a three year no fault warranty.

Yes they still have it thats what really attracted me rather han fix my exsiting one and possibly have something else wrong with it other than bent shaft or with my luck something else happening...

So far the unit has performed well. The only thing is the complete unit is a little loud almost like a helicopter sound. From what I have read the noise will quiet down sometime b/w 10 and 20 hours. The new unit sure looks a lot better than my old 90's drive.
