Can someone please provide some insight on the long yellow spindle that is coming out at an angle on the bottom of the carb on the attached picture? I believe I need some kind of gasket in here as it has a slow leak of gasoline. Does anyone know where I can find this gasket? Also it seems that the tighter I tighten the nut that holds it in the port, the harder it is to turn the spindle. Thanks in advance for the help.

Those spindles are carburetor high-speed (yellow) and low-speed needle valves. They adjust rich/lean for the motor. There's a sticky/faq post on one of these forums at Iboats that will tell you how to adjust them to tune the motor for best running. What you need is packing washers that seal the spindle when the nut is tightened down. Might try Laings Outboards, Twin City Outboards or Engine, Blade and Prop (Milwaukee), they're all on the web. Also make sure you are running 16:1 or 24:1 fuel/oil mix or it won't last long. They will need your model/serial number, which should be on a small metal plate on the top/front of the transom clamp.

Is the long skinny one the highspeed or low speed? I assume the other you are referring to is the knob that the choke is on? Thanks!

Actually, I was off a bit in my previous post. Your high-speed jet is the yellow-knobbed one, the one under it is the carb fuel shut-off, right? The slow-speed jet is that little round plate held on with three bolts (upper right in your photo, from the yellow knob) and a adjust-screw with spring under it. I get cobwebs as I get older.

Well Im not really sure. I called to order packing washers to stop the leak and the man told me that it is a setting and once it is set, you tighten to nut down and the spindle will no longer move. The knob has choke to the left, rich, lean, off written above it. There is a setting on the springed screw on the round plate, but not completely sure what it is for.

C'mon guys,

The big yellow knob is the high speed mixture adjustment. Turning it all the way to the left holds the float pin down, flooding the carburetor for cold starting (instead of the usual choke). Once it is running you turn it back till it runs the best.

The one below is the fuel shut-off valve. An on-off valve to allow or stop flow of fuel from the tank.

The little screw on the side is the idle mixture adjustment. It is unusual in the way it works. It holds the throttle valve open a bit. Sort of like messing with the link & sync on a normal motor. You tinker around with it till you get the best slow idle. Then forget it's there.

So should the shut-off valve be all the way open when running and leave it open until it won't be run for a period of time and close it and burn all of the gas out of the carb?
