Have Sea Horse 6
M/N 6R-73S
S/N J3736990
Thermostat cover P/N 312714

Having continuing problem w/cover leaking & effecting engine performance. Removed thermostat to possibly reduce pressure but still leaks. Cover seems to have warped but question is why? Is there underlying problem causing this? Where can I get parts; new gasket & cover? Thanks for help in advance.
Bill

Re: Sea Horse 6 thermostat leak

The gasket is still available at any dealership. Gasket OMC part #311145, about $1.50. The cap (cover) has been unavailable since 1997, however I'm sure that one could be found at the dealerships or other outboard repair shops. Cover is OMC part #312714, about 19.00.

The cap is leaking due to the fact that it has been warped by overtorquing the retaining bolts.

Hint.... On the work bench, Set the cap upright and have the outer end edges elevated ever so slightly with thin nuts (or something). Tap the cap in the center gently. It's easy to straighten that cap back so that it won't leak.... done it many times.

Just don't have it elevated about a half inch and belt it with a five pound hammer!(grin)
