Hi - I have my Grandpas old Sea King 15 and it has no spark -- I can build a computer or amortize loans but I know nothing about outboard engines. If I read previous posts correctly I have a 62 Gale but the SN and Model #'s are below, can someone help me w/ the ID. Also ... where do I start?? Grandpa died the day after The Cowboys won their last superbowl and the boat hasn't ran since.

Model # GG18734B
SN : 26X849037

Re: Sea King 15 Needs Help

I don't find a GG18734B But it is probably a 62 or 63.Reverse the first to degits in the ser number. There is a sticky in the FAQs section "waking a sleeping outboard".If your mechanically inclined. If you have changed oil or tuned a engine, can handle tools you can handle a wake up.Outboards are really pretty simple. It is closly related to the Evinrude/Johnson 15s.Routine parts
are readily available some right here at Iboats.Other parts are also pretty easy to find either at a BRP dealer or any number of used outboard parts
dealers. The E/J service manuals are best and will serve well.I think reprints are available right here at Iboats.Aftermarket manuals are pretty good as well
The Gale 15 is covered in the same section as the 15/18 and 20hp E/J.
If original the coils will probably need replacement. You can do a basic inspection through the window in the top of flywheel.any cracks or discoloration will indicate replacement. You may want to do a compression check before going to far.Start by just pulling it over there should be a distinct compression feel sort of a wump wump.We can guide you along feel free to ask any questions.

Re: Sea King 15 Needs Help

There was a 18734C in 1963. However yours clearly is a '62 as indicated by the SN. 18734C is a Gale model 15D15P.

As near as I can figure out, Gale ran out of motors and brought some in from Canada. So you probably have a '63 which was early released in '62. 1963 was the last year of U.S. Gale production.

I agree, get yourself a Johnson or Evinrude service manual for their 18 - 20hp. Your motor has minor differences, but that is close enough.

Re: Sea King 15 Needs Help

Thanks for the ID help -- I should get a look at this baby tomorrow. I will try to get my hands on a manual and be asking plenty of questions. I am reasonably sure the compression is at least decent but I think you are right on about the points. I will check out the FAQ and keep posting. -- Thanks again

Hey Gents - What do you think about the cd manuals? Any experience with those. There is one out on ebay for 1950 - 1989 Johnson 2-60HP. I just dont want to waste any money. By the way the coil (if I am looking at the right thing.... looks fine. Whats next??
Thanks Rummy

Re: Sea King 15 Needs Help

I have no personal experience with the CDs.I'm pretty sure they are made from regular manuals.and there may be copywrite issues.Of course they are no better than the manuals they are made from and the quality of the preperation.Personally I prefer the real thing. As far as the coils there is one for each cylinder. Its possible they have been replaced if they haven't you'll soon know by their performance.

Re: Sea King 15 Needs Help

SS - So I have visually inspected the Coils and they look newer and in good shape from what I can see thru the window on top of flywheel. I am trying to get an actual manual but for now what should I check next or do next? I have no spark but I do have compression. Tks for any help --- I know my q's are probably pretty basic.

BTW -- Where is the sticky for "waking an outboard" I can't find that string or title in the FAQ section? Thank You.
