Sea King 40 HP (to big?)

I recently acquired a 1960 Sea King 15' fiberglass boat. I was looking for a Sea King motor and found a 1963 short shaft 40 hp. My concern is if it is to big for the boat? I cannot find any horsepower rating info on the boat anywhere.

The boat does have ski tow hooks on the back so I would think it could handle the 40 hp.

I am new to boating so any help would greatly be appreciated.

Regards,
David

I certainly don't think it would be too big. 15" boats with 40hp motors were the bread and butter family boats of the industry in 1960.

Just check the boat over to be sure transom and bottom are sound.

And make sure your transom fits the outboard leg...should be 15 inches from top of transom to bottom of boat in a straight, vertical line...not angled along the angle of the transom. You want the cavitation plate on the outboard more or less even with the bottom of the boat.
