i have a boat motor that i know nothing about. it says sea king five on the side and tha is it. no serial numbers or anything. i want to know if anyone knows how to find info about it or if i will be powerful enough to push my 14ft john boat at a reasonable speed

Nice looking SK. It is a 1960-63 model, can't be any more exact without the model number which should be on the side of the stern clamp bracket on the other side from the picture view.

Your motor was made by Gale Products Division of OMC. You may have heard of the other OMC motors, Evinrude and Johnson. Many but not all parts on your motor are the same as their E/J cousins. Commonly needed parts are available here at iboats.

Fuel mix is 24:1, or 1 pint of TC-W3 certified outboard oil to 6 gallons of regular unleaded. Lower unit takes 80-90 wt outboard gear oil.

Those motors run beautifully when they are right, and should push your jon just fine. It is about 45 years old, so it should be understandable that it might take a bit of work and $ to make it right, but it is worth it. Expect to replace coils, maybe points & condensers, clean the carburetor and put in a kit, replace water pump impeller. Don't be surprised, you have to remove the powerhead to do the impeller. Replace the gasket and o-ring on the carbon seal that you will find when you get the powerhead off. Fuel pump is not repairable and will have to be replaced if it doesn't work.

Get yourself an extension handle so you can sit one seat forward.
It should plane your Jon easily if you are in the 180 lb. range.

You can make an extension handle for about $15, using some 1.5 diameter pvc pipe, 4 pipe clamps and a piece of wood same diameter as your tiller handle. Measure length of the tiller handle/grip, cut the pvc pipe twice that measurement, cut 1/4 to 1/2 inch slot lengthwise in the pvc pipe with a table saw or circular saw (but don't cut the pipe in half, 2 pieces), slide one end of the pipe over your tiller handle and clamp in place with 2 clamps, cut a piece of round wood to length and fit/clamp it into the other end of the pipe.
I tried to make mine long enough to steer from the middle seat, but no go. The offset angle of the tiller handle negates that...make it long enough to reach the middle seat (42 inches) and you can't center the steering without the extension being way over the port gunwhale. Had to compromise and rig a seat/box right behind the middle seat and use a shorter wooden extension so I still have full steering/turning range. Still have to test it out, but am delayed by honey-do's this holiday weekend.

Its' been 30 some years since we did or extension.On a 56? Gale 5.I think it was store bought.
Don't recall having an off set or anything.It doesn't have to reach the seat though just far enough you can reach it.Our boat was a small 12ft home made steel flat bottom fairly narrow.Don't recall any problem with handle reaching the edge of the boat.If you cheat back a little on the seat and reach back I would think you could make up 18 to 24 inches of reach.Im sure our seats were probably closer but the boat was no more than 40 or 42 inches at the seat.
As I recall there was a connector that replaced the twist handle and you could quick connect the extension as needed.Though we left it connected most of the time.
Anyway make it as short as is comfortable I don't think it will interfere.
