Sea King info/year

Hi,

I've searched and can't seem to find where you guys are decoding the Sea King/Wards outboard model/serial numbers. Year/HP.
Here's what I have:
Sea King / Wards / Gale
Model #: GG1881A
Serial #: 36X872336

I think it is a 1963.

Also, this supposedly can convert from long to short shaft. Currently has an extra section that looks like it can just be unbolted and removed. Anyone have any info on converting it to a short shaft. I can add some photos if needed.

this goes up to 1963 but i dont think your numbers are on there.....make sure you numbers are correct.

Here's a pic of that long shaft extension.

Does anyone know if that can just be removed and it is good to go as a short shaft? I'm thinking I could just remove it and be done - but this is the first outboard I have had that is like this. The guy I bought it from said it could be removed (but he didn't know as he had purchased it from another guy, etc, etc..).

Any insight would be appreciated.

Yes you can remove the extension and make it a short shaft. That will require a shorter driveshaft, water tube and shift rod connector...probably less than $100. Try the free classified at www.aomci.org to find the shaft, tube and connector. Of course if you don't want to spend that kind of $$, you could just raise the motor on the transom a bit by shimming inside the transom clamp. Won't hurt to run a long shaft on a short transom but you will lose a little speed and it won't handle quite as good. You can sell the parts that make yours a long shaft, housing extension, longer driveshaft, water tube and shift rod connector to recoup some of your conversion expense.

The shaft should be the same as an 18hp Johnson or Evinrude and easy to find. You can cut 5 inches off the water tube. The shift rod depends on whether it has an extra long connector, or an extra long lower shift rod. Expect to find either. If it is a long connector, merely replace it with a short one. If it is a long shift rod, that's more complicated. You are supposed to replace it with a short one, but if you are careful to do it you can cut off exactly 5 inches and file a notch for the connector with a chainsaw file. Be exact on the notch location too. Beats taking the gearcase apart.
