Sea King Outboard

Hello. I am new to the forum and know nothing about outboard motors. I just traded some toys for a 5HP Sea King outboard. It was sold by Montgomery Ward. Model number is VWB 19072 SN# 46X12521

Came with original vented metal gas tank and hose. I put it in a barrel and it actually started and ran ok. Must need some fluid changes and tuning but I don't know where to start. Thought about just selling it AS IS. What is the value of this relic? What would it cost to get it serviced and or is it worth dumping money into. I really would rather have a small 4 stroke.

welcome to iboats caddy! unfortunately the value of your motor is only a couple of hundred at best..... thats after you spend time and money on it. easy to work on tho!

Being a 64 I believe you can use 50 to 1 but I would use 25 to 1. Maybe someone else can be more clear on it but those early 60's motors were on the dividing line between the two mixes. You have a really nice great running motor. I wouldn't even think about a 4 stroke unless you have money to burn. Change your lower unit oil. Take a look at the coils; even if you have spark they may be shot as most likely indicated by cracks and breaks on the covering. If they are cracked/ old they will crap out when you put it under a load. Coils are cheap and easy to replace. Other than that, if it runs good, I'd leave it alone. Let us know how you make out. i would also put an impeller in it.....or things could go bad in a short time.

Good advice. Is there an instruction manual online or paper explaining how to change the coils, impeller and lower oil?

Hey guys, i just picked up a brand new condition 1974 sea king 25 hp chrysler production. Does this have reverse on it? And does anyone know what type of controls it will take. Im building a boat and have to do everything from scratch. Any info would be great, thanks alot, Mike

I see you are new here, so I won't fuss at you for hijacking another thread. But the proper thing to do is start your own. Nevertheless, of course your motor has a reverse. You need a Chrysler remote control. They are found on ebay fairly often.

Ok thanks for for that, i thought it was good to put it here since it was about the same engine. The only reason I asked about reverse is because i saw an older manual for a sea king that didnt have reverse, juxt wanted to be sure when im pulling head in to a dock! Thanks for the info.

That old non-shift 12hp Sea King would be a Gale-built one from the early 1950's. Your 1970's Chrysler-built one is a totally different animal.
